Downeast Maine Mat Expansion Project: Year 2 Data Summary, Mary Lindsey Smith Phd, Evelyn Ali Bs, Tyler Egeland Ba
Substance Use Research & Evaluation
This report summarizes the Year 2 activities of the Healthy Acadia Downeast Maine MAT Expansion Project. Through a collaborative effort of Healthy Acadia, its providers, the Downeast Substance Treatment Network and Downeast Substance Use Response Coalition, the project utilized multiple evidence-based strategies to combat opioid use disorder (OUD) in Downeast Maine.

Barriers And Facilitators To Opioid Use Treatment And Recovery Services During Pregnancy, Loralie Woods
Barriers And Facilitators To Opioid Use Treatment And Recovery Services During Pregnancy, Loralie Woods
Dissertations
Purpose: To identify barriers and facilitators to opioid use treatment and recovery services among pregnant and nonpregnant women who misuse opioids.
Background: Over 130 Americans die daily after overdosing on opioids. Women have not been immune from opioid use disorders (OUDs), with a 4-fold increase from 1999-2010. The prevalence of opioid use among pregnant women increased from 1.5 per 1,000 hospital deliveries to 6.5. Although the annual National Surveys on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) has provided information on risk factors for OUD related to socioeconomic and demographic factors, no studies using this data have identified barriers to opioid use …
The Effects Of Motivational Interviewing For Those Afflicted With Opioid Addiction, Kathy Roberts
The Effects Of Motivational Interviewing For Those Afflicted With Opioid Addiction, Kathy Roberts
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Substance use disorders are a worldwide problem, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) there were 70,237 drug overdose deaths that occurred in the United States in 2017, of which 47,600 were opioid related. Illinois had a 14.3% increase of opioid deaths from 2016-2017 (CDC, 2017). Numerous interventions exist to address this health concern, yet evidence shows that Motivational Interviewing (MI) was the most efficient and effective way to promote behavioral change. The purpose of this EBP project was to provide evidence that MI increased referrals and promoted compliance with appointments to treatment programs. The sample for this project …

Training The Next Generation Of Family Medicine Providers Through Group Buprenorphine-Naloxone Visits, Krystina Callahan, Lara Weinstein, Md, Erica Li, Md, Sunny Lai, Md, Alexis Silverio
Training The Next Generation Of Family Medicine Providers Through Group Buprenorphine-Naloxone Visits, Krystina Callahan, Lara Weinstein, Md, Erica Li, Md, Sunny Lai, Md, Alexis Silverio
Phase 1
Introduction: The rise in opioid use disorders (OUD) and fatal overdoses highlight the need to expand access to and capacity for treating OUD. Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), a medication/group visit model, done in the office setting, is an effective remedy for treating OUD. Understanding residents’ perspectives on their clinical training in MAT can inform the design of a more effective and responsive curriculum.
Methods: A qualitative study using group semi-structured interviews with residents in an urban family medicine residency rotating through a federally qualified health center. Interviews centered on strengths and weaknesses of the MAT program, resident likeliness to …
Relationship Between Initial Prescription Opioid Exposure Length And Future Opioid Use Disorder Diagnosis In Opioid Naive Adolescents, Eric Lindahl
Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy
Objectives: The long-term risks associated with the use of short-term prescription opioids in opioid naïve adolescents in not well characterized. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential association between the days’ supply of the initial prescription opioid exposure and the rates of diagnosed OUD in the subsequent 3-year period. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using a nationwide database of commercially-insured adolescents aged 12-17 at the time of the index opioid fill. A multivariable Cox Proportional Hazard regression model was developed to analyze the association of interest while accounting for known risk factors for the development …
Breaking The Chain: Evaluating The Links Between Opioid Use Disorder, Overdose, And Suicide, Amanda Nicole Stover Mph
Breaking The Chain: Evaluating The Links Between Opioid Use Disorder, Overdose, And Suicide, Amanda Nicole Stover Mph
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Previous research has estimated that 20–30% of individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) have a history of both suicide attempt and unintentional opioid overdose. In 2018, more than 1.9 million adults 18 years and older had an OUD; while 1.4 million adults attempted suicide that same year (SAMHSA, 2019). The key to understanding this relationship is examining behaviors that precede these potentially fatal behaviors. One such precursory behavior is self-injury. Self-injurious behaviors (SIB) are one of the most important risk factors for future suicide (Cavanagh et al.,2003). This study has three primary objectives. The first is to conduct a systematic …
The Effect Of Perceived Physician Opinion On Breastfeeding In Women With Opioid Use Disorder Who Are Receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment, Lacey Murray, Meghan Gannon, Phd, Vanessa Short, Phd, Mph
The Effect Of Perceived Physician Opinion On Breastfeeding In Women With Opioid Use Disorder Who Are Receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment, Lacey Murray, Meghan Gannon, Phd, Vanessa Short, Phd, Mph
Phase 1
Women who receive medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) are less likely to breastfeed than the general population despite the many possible benefits to the newborn. The ongoing study examines the effect of perceived physician opinion on the outcome of breastfeeding in women receiving MAT for OUD. Women who were receiving MAT for OUD at Thomas Jefferson University’s Family Center were given a survey during their third trimester (n=45), and at 1 month postpartum (n=33) to gather information on the perceived opinion of their physicians on how they should feed their baby and the importance of those opinions. …
