Neuromuscular Fatigue And Muscle Damage Following A Simulated Singles Badminton Match, Zengyuan Lin, Anthony J. Blazevich, Chris R. Abbiss, Jodie Cochrane Wilkie, Kazunori Nosaka

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Purpose:

To understand muscle damage in badminton, changes in neuromuscular function were investigated after simulated badminton singles matches performed by ten state-level male players.

Methods:

Each participant played eight matches and measurements were taken before, immediately after, and 1 and 24 h after each match. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) torque of the knee extensors and flexors, voluntary activation (VA) during MVC and torques generated by doublet (TDoublet), 20 (T20) and 80 Hz (T80) electrical stimulations of the knee extensors were measured from the dominant leg (the racket-hold arm side). Muscle soreness was assessed …

Muscle Damage Indicated By Maximal Voluntary Contraction Strength Changes From Immediately To 1 Day After Eccentric Exercise Of The Knee Extensors, Mikio Shoji, Ryoichi Ema, Kazunori Nosaka, Akihiro Kanda, Kosuke Hirata, Ryota Akagi

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The present study examined if the magnitude of changes in indirect muscle damage markers could be predicted by maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) torque changes from immediately to 1 day after eccentric exercise. Twenty-eight young men performed 100 maximal isokinetic (60°/s) eccentric contractions of the knee extensors. MVIC torque, potentiated doublet torque, voluntary activation (VA) during MVIC, shear modulus of rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis and lateralis, and muscle soreness of these muscles were measured before, immediately after, and 1–3 days post-exercise. Based on the recovery rate of the MVIC torque from immediately to 1-day post-exercise, the participants were placed …

Effects Of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation On Exercise Induced Muscle Damage And Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness After A Bout Of Eccentric Exercise, Crystal Lee Mar 2021

Effects Of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation On Exercise Induced Muscle Damage And Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness After A Bout Of Eccentric Exercise, Crystal Lee

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) have the potential to reduce both exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) after a bout of eccentric contractions (ECC). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of BCAA supplementation for 12 days prior to and for an additional 7 days following a bout of ECC on EIMD and DOMS. Sixteen women with no prior experience with strength training were assigned randomly to a BCAA group or a placebo group. Only four participants completed the trial due to COVID-19 (another completed 72h of recovery and was included). Participants supplemented …

Muscle Length Influence On Rectus Femoris Damage And Protective Effect In Knee Extensor Eccentric Exercise, Ryoichi Ema, Kazunori Nosaka, Ryosuke Kawashima, Akihiro Kanda, Koya Ikeda, Ryota Akagi

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

© 2020 The Authors. Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science In Sports published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd This study tested the hypothesis that the magnitude of rectus femoris (RF) damage and the repeated bout effect (RBE) would be greater after knee extensor eccentric exercise performed in a supine (long RF lengths) than a sitting (short RF lengths) position, and the muscle length effects would be more prominent at the proximal than distal RF. Young untrained men were placed to one of the two groups (n = 14 per group). S group performed the knee extensor eccentric exercise in …

Muscle Damage And Performance After Single And Multiple Simulated Matches In University Elite Female Soccer Players, Tai-Ying Chou, Kazunori Nosaka, Trevor C. Chen Jan 2021

Muscle Damage And Performance After Single And Multiple Simulated Matches In University Elite Female Soccer Players, Tai-Ying Chou, Kazunori Nosaka, Trevor C. Chen

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The present study aimed to compare changes in muscle damage and performance parameters after playing single versus multiple soccer matches to examine fixture congestion effects on performance. Twelve elite female university soccer players performed single, three and six consecutive 90-min bouts of the Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test (LIST) with ≥ 12-weeks between conditions in a pseudo-randomized order. Heart rate, blood lactate, rating of perceived exertion and covering distance in each LIST were examined. Changes in several types of muscle damage (e.g., maximal voluntary isometric torque of the knee extensors: MVC-KE) and performance measures (e.g., Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test level 1: …

The Influence Of Set-Repetition Configuration In Eccentric Exercise On Muscle Damage And Repeated Bout Effect, Roy Y.H. Chan Jan 2011

The Influence Of Set-Repetition Configuration In Eccentric Exercise On Muscle Damage And Repeated Bout Effect, Roy Y.H. Chan

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

It is well known that maximal eccentric exercise induces muscle damage, especially when it is performed for the first time. However, muscle damage is attenuated in subsequent bouts of the same or similar exercise, which is known as the repeated bout effect. One of the factors affecting the magnitude of muscle damage and the repeated bout effect is the number of eccentric contractions; however, it is unknown if different set-repetition configurations with the same number of eccentric contractions would result in different magnitudes of muscle damage and adaptation. This study investigated changes in muscle strength, range of motion (ROM), muscle …
