Prediction Of Throwing Distance In The Men’S And Women’S Javelin Final At The 2017 Iaaf World Championships, John Krzyszkowski, Kristof Kipp

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to use regularised regression models to identify the most important biomechanical predictors of throwing distance in elite male (M) and female (F) javelin throwers at the 2017 IAAF world championships. Biomechanical data from 13 male and 12 female javelin throwers who competed at the 2017 IAAF world championships were obtained from an official scientific IAAF report. Regularised regression models were used to investigate the associations between throwing distance and release parameters, whole-body kinematic and joint-level kinematic data. The regularised regression models identified two biomechanical predictors of throwing distances in both M and F javelin …

Increasing Awareness Amongst Injured Student-Athletes, Daniel Lomeli May 2021

Increasing Awareness Amongst Injured Student-Athletes, Daniel Lomeli

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The NCAA states that there are around half a million college student athletes in America, and according to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (2020) ninety percent of them will have a sports related injury some time in their career. Student-athletes compared to non-athletes are less likely to utilize resources and professional assistance (Moulton, Molstad, & Turner 1997). Due to fear of seeming weak, losing training time, judgement from peers or coaches and the appearance of needing any psychological assistance, many athletes are less likely to seek help (Brooks & Bull, 1999). Student Athletes seem to worsen their academic performance as …

The Application Of Biomechanical Technology In Sports, Timothy Leckrone Apr 2021

The Application Of Biomechanical Technology In Sports, Timothy Leckrone

Senior Honors Theses

Technology in biomechanics encompasses eight major categories: artificial optical devices, anthropometry, timing devices, electrogoniometry, electromyography, dynamometry, inertial tracking systems, and modeling and simulation. As technology improves and becomes more accessible to the general population, it becomes easier to implement biomechanical technology into sports. For each area of focus, biomechanical technology has numerous points of current application or potential application. This application has benefit in injury prevention, technique improvement, rule enforcement, performance optimization, overall health and condition analysis, sports timing, and product development and testing. This thesis examines each area in turn as well as the various tools implemented in order …

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Purpose: Anger associated with sports participation may affect inability to acutely process anger, may decrease performance and increase the likelihood of risk-taking behavior in collegiate athletes. Therefore, the purpose was to examine the prevalence of anger in collegiate student-athletes across sex, academic status, and sport type. Methods: A cross sectional study over a three-year period examined 759 NCAA Division I student-athletes at one institution (age=20±1 years; males: n=259; females: n=500) completed an optional pre-participation behavioral health screening questionnaire, personal demographic information and the Anger Index Self-Test. Results: Overall, 37.2% (n=282/759; males=127/259, 49.0%; females=155/500, 31.0%) of participants were at …

The Point In Which Peak Power Occurs In Relation To The Percentage Of One-Repetition Max For The Clean, Back Squat, And Bench Press Exercises Across Various Athlete Types, Maria Darling Jan 2021

The Point In Which Peak Power Occurs In Relation To The Percentage Of One-Repetition Max For The Clean, Back Squat, And Bench Press Exercises Across Various Athlete Types, Maria Darling

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the force-velocity curve in the athletic population. There was special interest in determining the point of peak-power (PP%), the point of peak power drop-off (PPDO%), and the range (RANGE) between these points for three different exercises: the bench press (BENCH), the back squat (SQUAT), and the floor clean (CLEAN). Further investigation looked to find differences in these points between different sub-groups within the athletes sampled. Data was retrieved from an existing database on 72 healthy Fort Hays State University athletes from five different teams during their off-season six-week training cycle. All …

The Influence Of Biological Sex, Athletic Identity And Pressure On Collegiate Athlete's Attitudes And Behaviors Toward Playing Through Pain And Injury, Margaret Anne Willis Jan 2021

The Influence Of Biological Sex, Athletic Identity And Pressure On Collegiate Athlete's Attitudes And Behaviors Toward Playing Through Pain And Injury, Margaret Anne Willis

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Injuries are to be expected when participating in all levels of collegiate sports (e.g., recreation, elite, club, intermural). It is common among collegiate athletes to continue practicing or competing despite being in pain/injured. This willingness to play hurt can cause negative consequences for athlete’s future health. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of biological sex, athletic identity and pressure on collegiate athlete’s attitudes and behaviors toward playing through pain and injury. Student-athletes involved in NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II sports completed two questionnaires and one measurement scale: demographic questionnaire, Risk, Pain and Injury Questionnaire …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The aim of this study was to assess drop jump (DJ) performance variables (jump height, contact time, and reactive strength index) concomitant to surface electromyography (sEMG) of lower limb muscles during DJs from different drop heights (intensities). The eccentric and concentric phase sEMG from the gastrocnemius medialis, biceps femoris, and vastus medialis muscles were assessed during all tests, with sEMG activity normalized to maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). In a cross-sectional, study, 10 amateur female volleyball players (age 22.1 ± 1.8 years; body mass 72.9 ± 15.2 kg; height 1.70 ± 0.08 m) completed DJs from six heights [15-90 cm …

The Intra-And Inter-Rater Reliability Of A Hip Rotation Range-Of-Motion Measurement Using A Smartphone Application In Academy Football (Soccer) Players, Paul Spork, James O’Brien, Morris Sepoetro, Maximilian Plachel, Thomas Stöggl Jan 2021

The Intra-And Inter-Rater Reliability Of A Hip Rotation Range-Of-Motion Measurement Using A Smartphone Application In Academy Football (Soccer) Players, Paul Spork, James O’Brien, Morris Sepoetro, Maximilian Plachel, Thomas Stöggl

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The clinical assessment of hip rotation range-of-motion (ROM) is important for managing hip and groin injuries in footballers. Previously published reliability studies on hip ROM have employed protocols that are difficult to replicate under everyday clinical conditions. This single trial, intra-and inter-rater reliability study included 41 male academy football (soccer) players, aged 14–15 years, from one European football academy. Passive hip internal rotation (IR) and external rotation (ER) ROM were measured in supine with hip and knee flexed to 90◦ . The ROM was determined using a smartphone application, with the smartphone attached to the lower leg. The tests were …
