Upper Body Characteristics Related To Double Pole Performance In Female Cross Country Skiers, Karmen M. Whitham

The purpose of the current study was to correlate upper body (UB) lean mass (UBLM), UB maximal strength (UBMS), and average power production during a 3-min ski ergometer (SERG) test to predict the dependent variable, a one-kilometer uphill double pole time trial (DPTT) on snow. We hypothesized UBLM would be most important to performance. All tests were conducted within four weeks of completing the championship phase of a Division I cross country (XC) ski season. Skiers (n=10; all females) performed the mass-start DPTT on snow (i.e., criterion measure), SERG, and UBMS separated by at least a few days recovery. Lastly, …

As of 2010 there were over 265 million registered soccer athletes worldwide, and in particular, the number of women players were rapidly increasing (Soligard, et al., (2010). Consequently, playing soccer accounts for approximately one quarter of all injuries in sport, and due to its nature of jumping, pivoting and cross-cutting, the majority of these are non-contact, lower extremity injuries. Therefore, playing soccer entails a substantial amount of injury risk for its participants. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the FIFA 11+ Warm Up Program in collegiate female soccer athletes.

Context: In the United States, an excess of $1 billion is spent annually on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair surgeries/rehabilitation programs in varsity female sports. Research has indicated that female athletes may be 2 to 10 times more likely to sustain an ACL tear than their male counterparts. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the neuromuscular changes in females during different phases of the menstrual cycle. Injury to athletes in sport occurs as a result of extrinsic and intrinsic risk factors. Mounting evidence points toward decreased strength as a predictor of injury in athletes. The overall aim of this thesis was to increase strength and conditioning coaches, and sport scientists’ understanding of the lower-body muscle structures related to enhanced lower-body physical capacities, and how to best evoke desirable training-specific adaptations. To address this aim, three successive steps of research were evaluated: (1) analysis of the factors related to increased performance in competitive surfing, (2) relationships between lower-body muscle structures and factors associated with enhanced physical performance, and (3) comparison of the training-specific adaptations evoked from various training methods.
