The unique adaptive ability of skeletal muscle to meet functional demands is exemplified in its response to exercise. Though little is known about the molecular mechanisms that regulate this plasticity, the extracellular matrix (ECM) is believed to play a large role. The basal lamina is a specialized layer of ECM that lies in direct contact with the cell membrane of muscle fibers and facilitates environment-to-cell interactions. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is an enzyme in the basal lamina that regulates much of these adaptive processes. Partial bodyweight support devices have applications in clinical rehabilitation, sports medicine, and have been further used as ground-based models to simulate microgravity. In the context of sports medicine and exercise science, bodyweight support devices lower the weight of the individual which in turn reduces the forces acting on the musculoskeletal system. This allows individuals that are recovering from a lower body injury/ surgical procedure to recover faster and maintain physical fitness. Properly fitted footwear is important for peak athletic performance and comfort (Wakeling, Pascual, & Nigg, 2002; Wunderlich & Cavanagh, 2001). Traditionally, all footwear is designed from a single last that attempts to fit the typical adult male foot (Wunderlich & Cavanagh, 2001). However, it has been found that individuals vary in foot morphology and loading characteristics (Kouchi, 1998; Razeghi & Edward, 2002). The purpose of this study was to document foot characteristics of an unshod population, specifically Samoan, which may aid in footwear design. 116 Samoan individuals and 106 Caucasian individuals were asked to voluntarily participate in the study. Women’s shoes are known to be constructed from the same parameters as men’s shoes but on a smaller scale. However, foot and gait characteristics are different between genders The purpose of this study was to determine if mid-sole design has an effect on ground reaction force characteristics during running, cutting and jumping motions. Twenty-two apparently healthy female (73.8±8.4 kg; 1.74±0.06 m) and seven male (73.5±5.3 kg; 1.68±0.02 m) current or recently graduated NCAA Division III athletes voluntarily participated in this study. The Acute Effect Of Pre-Exercise Static And Dynamic Stretching Of The Leg Flexors, Jocelyn Riordan

The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of pre-exercise static and dynamic stretching on peak torque of the knee extensors in female athletes and non-athletes. Thirty subjects (15 athletes and 15 non-athletes) completed three tests on an isokinetic dynamometer. After performing a randomly assigned pre-exercise stretching protocol (no stretching, static or dynamic) the subjects performed eight maximal, reciprocal knee extensions on an isokinetic dynamometer at three speeds (180, 120, 60˚/s) while measuring peak torque. No significant differences (p < .05) were found among the three stretching protocols for either the athletes or non-athletes. However, the results suggest that static stretching may cause a loss in overall peak torque in contrast to dynamic stretching in athletes.

High blood testosterone has been linked to the expression of aggressive personalities, but few studies have investigated the relationship between testosterone and competitiveness in anticipation of athletic competition. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-reported competitiveness and the anticipatory pre-competition circulating testosterone level. Twelve college-aged female athletes participated in a track relay-style race. Blood serum testosterone was tested 24 hours prior and 15 minutes prior to a competition using chemiluminescent immunoassay. Subjects completed the Revised Competitiveness Index (RCI) upon finishing the race. A dependent t-test was used to calculate differences between the two serum samples. …
