The purpose of this study was to determine if stroboscopic vision significantly effects performance on the YBT-LQ in athletes 12-18 years old, as well as investigating if age or sex effect performance. Previous research has demonstrated the clinical use of stroboscopic vision for athletic performance and rehabilitation, but no study had yet established the effect of stroboscopic vision on dynamic balance. Subjects performed the Y-Balance Lower Quarter (YBT-LQ) and then repeated the YBT-LQ with stroboscopic vision at a rate of 4 hertz (Hz). Over a million high school students are estimated to sustain at least one sports-related concussion annually. Unfortunately, over a third of these student-athletes suffer from post-concussion syndrome, which leads to the question of whether student-athletes are allowed proper time to heal after a concussion or if more can be done to optimize concussion recovery. Proper and optimal recovery post-concussion encompasses both physical and cognitive rest. While concussion management has traditionally focused on the physical aspects of recovery, emphasis has shifted to the cognitive impacts of concussions. Low energy availability (LEA) is a state in which energy intake is insufficient to support energy expenditure while maintaining energy balance, which has been shown to result in gastrointestinal distress, immunosuppression, reduced metabolic rate, menstrual dysfunction, diminished bone health, and impaired cardiovascular function in females. Alterations to the microbiome and mucosal lining may propagate gastrointestinal complaints and compromised immune function associated with LEA. The pathophysiology of LEA is otherwise largely driven by hormonal adaptations. Diminished production of thyroid hormones is known to contribute to reduced metabolic rate. Decreases in leptin and insulin and increases in ghrelin disrupt reproductive function through …
