Academic Comparison Of Athletes And Non-Athletes In A Rural High School, Holt E Zaugg

This study compares academic performance, behavior, and commitment of basketball and volleyball athletes and non-athletes in a rural Canadian high school. It compares mid-term and final grades in each school discipline; visits to an administrator for disciplinary visits; and demerit points for improper behavior; and estimates the mean weekly time commitment for athletes in each sport.

The Effect Of Sinoaortic Deafferentation On Renal Wrap Hypertension, J. Mark Van Ness, Teresa Craig, Carmen Hinojosa-Laborde, Joseph R. Haywood

The purpose of this study was to determine whether sinoaortic deafferentation (SAD) alters the severity of hypertension or sympathoadrenal contribution to mean blood pressure (MAP) during renal wrap hypertension. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with radiotelemetry transmitters for 24-hour recording of MAP and heart rate. All rats underwent either SAD or sham SAD (Intact) surgery and were allowed to recover for 10 to 14 days. The rats were then assigned to a normotensive (Sham) group or a hypertensive (Wrap) group in which 1-kidney figure-8 renal wrap was performed. Alcohol Related Violence And Unwanted Sexual Activity On The College Campus, Mary E. Nicholson, Min Qi Wang, Dolores Maney, Jianping Yuan, Beverly S. Mahoney, Daniel D. Adame

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among alcohol consumption, sexual assault and rape, and nonsexual violence in a college population at a large Northeastern university. A 49-item questionnaire was designed to elicit responses from both victims and perpetrators. Of the 1,084 respondents: 518 were male, 566 were female, the majority were White (91.8%), and in the 18-21 age range. Unwanted sexual activity, rape, and violence were significantly related to alcohol consumption on the college campus studied.
