The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a high-intensity interval training regime with elite collegiate rowers on their rowing performance. A total of 10 interval training sessions were performed over a four-week period with four males and five females completing all pre-testing performance and training sessions. Participants completed a 2000 m performance test to determine initial training intensity. The interventional training sessions consisted of 30 min of 10 s work: 5 s recovery. Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) are frequently occurring, yet poorly understood, injuries in sports (e.g., ice hockey) and other physical recreation activities where head impacts occur. Helmets are essential pieces of equipment used to protect participants’ heads from mTBIs. Evaluating the performance of helmets to prevent mTBIs using simulations on anatomically accurate computational head finite element models is critically important for advancing the development of safer helmets. One hundred and ninety-six patients at the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic (FKSMC) undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) were randomized as part of the multi-center STABILITY study to receive either an isolated ACLR or ACLR with a lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET). The STABILITY study followed these patients up to two years postoperative, and a long-term follow-up protocol was initiated afterwards. Eighty-two patients from this center were seen at three, five and seven years postoperative as part of a long-term follow-up. Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a common cause of non-arthritic hip pain and reduced physical activity in active young adults. It is defined as a motion-related disorder of the hip with a triad of symptoms, clinical signs, and imaging findings that represents symptomatic premature contact between the proximal femur and the acetabulum. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) have the potential to reduce both exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) after a bout of eccentric contractions (ECC). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of BCAA supplementation for 12 days prior to and for an additional 7 days following a bout of ECC on EIMD and DOMS. Sixteen women with no prior experience with strength training were assigned randomly to a BCAA group or a placebo group. It is unknown how many Canadian universities utilize sport psychology services in their athletic programs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with coaches of Canadian university varsity teams to learn about their opinions on sport psychology and mental performance consultants (MPCs). The research was approached from a pragmatic perspective. Results showed that MPCs are important to enhance performance and provide mental health resources. Aberrant landing biomechanics increase the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and are a focus of rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. The purpose of the present thesis was to develop and evaluate methods of assessing landing mechanics and investigate the effects of different rehabilitation strategies after ACL reconstruction. Three studies were conducted. The first study used a Delphi process to develop the content of a Clinician-Rated Drop Vertical Jump Scale to evaluate jump landing mechanics during rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an Even pacing strategy would be more optimal than the traditional fast-starting parabolic strategy in a 2000 m rowing race.  13 collegiate level rowers completed two 2000 m pacing strategies; one Evenly paced, and the other a traditional On Water strategy.  Neither pacing strategy demonstrated differences in performance.  This finding was consistent across sexes and experience levels.  Males demonstrated significant correlations with an Even pacing strategy and 6000 m performance (EP p=0.001).  Females showed significant correlation between both strategies and 6000 m performance, plus peak power and the On Water strategy …

According to the revised stress-injury model (Williams & Andersen, 1998), greater life stress predicts greater vulnerability to athletic injury, with this relationship being strongest among athletes exhibiting competitive anxiety, less social support, and non-adaptive coping skills. This study tested the validity of this model among collegiate cheerleaders, an injury-prone athlete group. Ninety-two collegiate cheerleaders recorded instances of injury over 12 weeks. Measures of life stress, competitive anxiety, coping style, social support, and previous injury were obtained. Heightened negative life stress did not coincide with greater injury. A positive stress-injury relationship was observed among cheerleaders reporting high avoidance coping. A negative …

The overall purpose of this dissertation was to understand the impact that partner play has in doubles racquet sports (tennis, badminton and squash) on emotions, coping and emotional regulation. Study 1 laid the groundwork to understanding the impact (positive or negative) that the different types of partner play (playing well, playing normal, or playing poorly) has in these dyads. Exercise interventions may impart protection against cognitive decline. A novel exercise approach is multiple-modality exercise (MME; aerobic, resistance, and balance exercise) with mind-motor training. Mind-motor training is a promising intervention in the study of cognitive function. Combining MME with mind-motor training may improve or maintain cognition and provide prevention of dementia early in the course of cognitive decline. Sport psychology has become widely applied in coaching practices to assist in athletic success. Despite the increased use, there is a lack of evidence-based sport psychology information available to coaches in the form of informal sources. The aim of this study was to explore coaches’ perceptions and use of a sport psychology website using mixed methods. Eight coaches participated in semi-structured interviews. A thematic analysis revealed five themes (current use, accessibility, attitudes, website use, website engagement). Google Analytics demonstrated coaches’ engagement with the website. It is unknown if deficits in the involved limb following acute Achilles tendon rupture (AATR) persist in the long-term, or differ between patients treated operatively or non-operatively. This study investigated 43 patients 15±1 years post-AATR from a previous randomized controlled trial (RCT) that compared operative and non-operative treatment. Structural characteristics in the Achilles tendon and surrounding musculature were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging. We also performed physical examinations and evaluated performance-based and patient-reported outcomes. The general purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effects of biofeedback training on sport performance. This dissertation was divided into three studies. Study 1 qualitatively explored athletes’ perspectives of biofeedback post-intervention. Five varsity athletes were provided with a five-session biofeedback intervention training respiration rate, heart rate variability, and skin conductance. Following the intervention, an interview was conducted. Athletes perceived biofeedback to enhance self-regulation skills both in sport and academics, contributing to perceptions of superior performance.

The performance impact of different knee extension angles in the setup position for a backstroke start was evaluated using an instrumented starting surface. Ten backstroke swimmers completed maximum-effort starts in each of two setup positions: one with the knees flexed, and one with the knees extended. The start handles and touchpad were instrumented with tri-axial force plates. Activity of major hip and knee extensors was measured using surface electromyography. This study investigated the effects of performing 30 second weight training bouts (30 s) on peak aerobic power, 2000 m time and peak and mean 1 min power output, compared to those of a low repetition strength training program (LoRep), in pre-conditioned well-trained male and female collegiate rowers while concurrently performing a high volume of endurance training over an identical five week period. In ramp-incremental cycling exercise, some individuals are capable of producing power output (PO) in excess of that produced at their limit of tolerance (LoT) while others cannot. This study sought to describe the: 1) prevalence of a “power reserve” within a group of young men (n=21; mean ± SD: age 25±4 years; V̇O2max45±8 ml•kg-1•min-1); and 2) muscle fatigue characteristics of those with and without a power reserve. We asked 217 sport surgery and 135 total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients to complete a questionnaire (e-Visit) before attending their two and six-week post-operative appointment. Our primary objective was to use the questions asked of patients prior to their appointment to develop a model that could be used as web-based e-Visit to predict early post-operative adverse events. Dysregulation of autonomic control often develops with advancing age, favoring a chronic state of heightened sympathetic outflow with parasympathetic withdrawal. However, the mechanisms of this age-related autonomic impairment are not known and may relate to alterations in brain structure (e.g. cortical atrophy) and/or altered neural function, particularly in regions related to the cortical autonomic network, namely, the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), insula cortex (IC), and hippocampus (HC). Generation UCAN® (UCAN), which contains heat treated non Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) corn starch, has the potential to enhance endurance exercise performance via altering substrate use; however, whether its effects are similar during high intensity, intermittent exercise, like that performed in soccer is unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the effects of UCAN on physical, skill and cognitive performance during and following a simulated soccer game.
