Athletic Identity Association And Prospective Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Predict Attitudes Of Collegiate Athletes Toward Seeking Help From The Athletic Department, Allie Zerr May 2024

Athletic Identity Association And Prospective Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Predict Attitudes Of Collegiate Athletes Toward Seeking Help From The Athletic Department, Allie Zerr

Master's Theses

There is an epidemic of mental health issues that has begun to be more openly talked about in college athletics. In 2022, the National Collegiate Athletic Association has found that college student-athletes are now 1.5-2 times more likely to report struggling with mental health than ever before. Previous research has shown a significant association with basic psychological needs satisfaction and overall psychological well-being. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the possible ways that reported of autonomy, competence, and relatedness need satisfaction predicted whether athletes would seek mental health services and identify how athletic identity plays into this …

Does Appearance Matter? The Relationship Of Perceived Body Size And Physical Appearance On Students' Attraction To Physical Activity At Recess, Danielle Belcher May 2024

Does Appearance Matter? The Relationship Of Perceived Body Size And Physical Appearance On Students' Attraction To Physical Activity At Recess, Danielle Belcher

Master's Theses

Drastic declines in recess physical activity (PA) have been observed within recent years (Center for Disease Control (CDC), 2017). Due to recess’ discretionary nature, psychosocial variables associated with PA are predictors of students’ PA levels. Recess is also a time of heightened bullying occurrences (Vaillancourt et al., 2010). Appearance-based bullying is the most common type of victimization that occurs in schools, transpiring more often in children with larger body max indexes (BMI), and possibly altering students’ physical self-perceptions. Physical self-perceptions have been shown to impact PA motivation, however, it is still unknown the extent to which appearance-based bullying, body size, …

The Validity Of The Six Minute Walk Test In Determining Vo2peak In Cancer Survivors: A Pilot Study, Deandra Elcock Apr 2019

The Validity Of The Six Minute Walk Test In Determining Vo2peak In Cancer Survivors: A Pilot Study, Deandra Elcock

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) is critical for developing and implementing an exercise prescription to guide a cancer survivor’s rehabilitative exercise program, which will improve physiological and psychological values in cancer survivors. Many clinicians choose a submaximal protocol, the 6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT) to determine VO2peak. The University of Northern Colorado Cancer Rehabilitation Institute’s (UNCCRI) treadmill protocol is cancer-specific and accurately determines VO2peak. PURPOSE: To determine the validity of VO2peak obtained from the 6MWT compared to the VO2peak obtained by the UNCCRI treadmill protocol. METHODS: 34 cancer survivors completed the …

Age-Related Cognitive Impairment In Apparently Healthy Older Adults, Jake Sage Apr 2019

Age-Related Cognitive Impairment In Apparently Healthy Older Adults, Jake Sage

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Significant increases in age-related cognitive impairment (ARCI) associated with aging have been observed among older adults, negatively affecting measures of Quality of Life (QOL). Purpose: To examine the effects of a 12-week aerobic and cognitive training intervention on cognitive function in apparently healthy older adults. Methods: Six participants (40-75 years) were randomly placed into one of three training groups: 1) aerobic, cognitive, and flexibility (AER/COG); 2) aerobic and flexibility (AER); or 3) cognitive and flexibility (COG). There was a complete physical and cognitive assessment administered before and after the 12-week intervention. Individuals were assigned to 36 one hour …

Perceived Body Image And Reasons For Exercise Among College Students, Ileana Flores Delgado Dec 2016

Perceived Body Image And Reasons For Exercise Among College Students, Ileana Flores Delgado

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Ideal body image perceptions from Western culture has led body dissatisfaction levels to increase significantly in the past 30 years. Researchers have found that individuals tend to have inaccurate perceptions of their bodies. Therefore, comparisons between inaccurate perceptions and an ideal body image cause body dissatisfaction. Minimal research has been done focusing on the relation between body image and specific exercise behaviors. The purpose of this research is to understand how someone’s own body perception affects their exercise behavior, type and frequency. Specifically, does body perception affect the behaviors the individual demonstrates while exercising? Exercise behaviors may include decisions for …

An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Core Endurance And Lower Extremity Strength, And The Ability To Recover After Perturbation, Carlie Jones-Hershinow Aug 2016

An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Core Endurance And Lower Extremity Strength, And The Ability To Recover After Perturbation, Carlie Jones-Hershinow

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Previous research suggests core strength training improves anticipatory postural adjustments, reducing one’s risk of a fall, and stronger core muscles lead to faster reaction times. This study investigated whether core endurance and lower extremity strength relate to the time one needs to stabilize after being perturbed. An evaluation of ten participants while warming up determined each participant’s transition speed between walking and running. While each participant walked at his/her transition speed, the belts were stopped randomly at an acceleration rate of

2.7 m∙s-2 and ground reaction forces were recorded during balance recovery. Additionally, each participant completed a series of …
