Efficacy Of The Fifa 11+ Injury Prevention Program In Maine High School Soccer, Meg Lander

Honors College

The purpose of this thesis was to assess the efficacy of the FIFA 11+ injury prevention program when used over the course of one soccer season in Maine high school athletics when compared to a standard warm-up approach. Every year, nearly two million injuries are sustained by high school athletes, and the FIFA 11+ program was developed to mitigate the risk of lower body injuries in soccer players. It has been shown to reduce the incidence of injury by one third or more in teenage and older athletes. Participants were randomly allocated into the FIFA 11+ group and the control …

The Long-Term Behavioral Effects Of Concussions And Post-Concussion Syndrome, Hannah Belleville May 2021

The Long-Term Behavioral Effects Of Concussions And Post-Concussion Syndrome, Hannah Belleville

Honors College

The focus of this thesis is to examine the effects of concussions on college athletes, specifically their social activity and behavioral changes. Concussions are mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) that occur after receiving a blow to the head or a whiplash injury that causes an altered state of consciousness, including but not limited to, being unconscious. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) reports that in the past five years college athletes have suffered 10,500 concussions. Improving Running Performance Using Non-Running Tasks, Darien Lewis May 2014

Improving Running Performance Using Non-Running Tasks, Darien Lewis

Honors College

For decades researchers and runners have endeavored to improve endurance running performance. Recent evidence suggests that adding resistance training to a running program can improve running performance. Our purpose was to determine if 6wks of resistance exercise via negative eccentrically-induced work (RENEW), an exercise that increases muscle size, strength, and stiffness, could serve as an effective “non-running” modality for improving running performance. Recreational runners were assigned to a: RENEW (n=7), plyometric (PLYO, n=7), or control (CON, n=7) group. RENEW trained on an eccentric ergometer (3x/wk, 10-30min, 54-66% of peak heart rate) while the PLYO performed …

Concussion Management, Education And Diagnosis In Eastern Maine High School Football, Sarah K. Lockhart

Honors College

Recent evidence has shown that concussions are more serious than previously anticipated, particularly in young adults. Football is one of the sports in which concussions are most commonly seen. It is important for high schools to educate, diagnose and manage concussions correctly to prevent the occurrence of potentially catastrophic events like second impact syndrome. Through interviews and observations of practices and games, three Eastern Maine high schools were assessed to evaluate their concussion policies. Administrators, coaches and medical personnel were interviewed regarding their concussion awareness. Through a qualitative coding process, themes were found and assessed. Themes found included: honesty; misconceptions; …
