Compression and cold therapy used separately have shown to reduce negative effects of tissue damage. The combining compression and cold therapy (cryocompression) as a single recovery modality has yet to be fully examined. To examine the effects of cryocompression on recovery following a bout of heavy resistance exercise, recreationally resistance trained men (n =16) were recruited, matched, and randomly assigned to either a cryocompression group (CRC) or control group (CON). Testing was performed before and then immediately after exercise, 60 minutes, 24 hours, and 48 hours after a heavy resistance exercise workout (barbell back squats for 4 sets of 6 …

Objective: The consequences of age-related decline in the somatotropic axis of humans are complex and remain largely unresolved. We tested the hypothesis that hGH measurements of plasma by bioassay vs immunoassay from samples obtained from free-living, elderly individuals would reveal a dichotomy in GH activities that are correlated with the functional status of the donors, i.e. their healthspan.
Design: Forty-one men and women of advanced age (men: N=16, age, 80.5±6.5years; height, 173.1±6.9cm; body mass, 81.8±13.0kg) and (women: N=25, age, 80.7±7.2years; height, 157.7±6.0cm; body mass, 68.8±17kg), were recruited for a cross-sectional study. Participants filled out PROMIS (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System, …

Ankle instability is weakness of the ankles due to previous injuries. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), more than 460,000 college athletes play a total of 24 sports. Results from Indiana University showed that 67% of former players claim they suffered a major injury while competing n the collegiate level.
Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit In Division Three Collegiate Football Quarterbacks, Anthony Wene
Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit In Division Three Collegiate Football Quarterbacks, Anthony Wene
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
The research looked at the internal rotation loss in collegiate football quarterbacks. A goniometer was used to measure the internal and external rotation of the shoulder for each subject. These measurements were then compared to what is considered glenohumeral internal rotation deficit, GIRD, as defined in the literature. A majority of the current literature focused on GIRD and its connection to baseball pitchers. This research focused on GIRD and its possible connection to football quarterbacks because of the repetitive overhead motion. GIRD is often connected to baseball pitchers due to the extensive research done with baseball pitchers. There are several …

An Examination Of Step Frequency And The Running Readiness Scal As Predictors Of Running-Related Injury In Collegiate Cross-Country Athletes, Jenna D'Errico
An Examination Of Step Frequency And The Running Readiness Scal As Predictors Of Running-Related Injury In Collegiate Cross-Country Athletes, Jenna D'Errico
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between step frequency, the Running Readiness Scale, and Running-Related Injury rate among the Otterbein cross-country team during the Fall 2016 season. Step frequencies were calculated for each athlete at a preferred and pre-determined pace. As a part of the running Readiness Scale assessment, each athlete completed a series of screening tasks to assess body alignment, weight distribution, and muscular endurance. Each participant logged their running and injury history throughout the season using the Otterbein Run Tracker app. The researchers hypothesized that higher step frequencies and Running Readiness Scale pass rates …
The Effects Of Different Exercise Training Modalities On Plasma Proenkephalin Peptide F In Women, William H. Dupont, William J. Kraemer, Bradley C. Nindl, Elaine C. Lee, Maren S. Fragala, Disa L. Hatfield, Lydia K. Caldwell, Emily M. Post, Matthew K. Beeler, Jeff S. Volek, Carl M. Maresh

Due to the important interactions of proenkephalin fragments (e.g., proenkephalin [107–140] Peptide F) to enhance activation of immune cells and potentially combat pain associated with exercise-induced muscle tissue damage, we examined the differential plasma responses of Peptide F to different exercise training programs. Participants were tested pre-training (T1), and after 8 weeks (T2) of training. Fiftynine healthy women were matched and then randomly assigned to one of four groups: heavy resistance strength training (STR, n = 18), high intensity endurance training (END, n = 14), combined strength and endurance training (CMB, n = 17), or control (CON, n = 10). …

NSAIDs are commonly used among athletes for a variety of reasons. The purpose of this research is to gain insight on Division III athletes’view and opinions of NSAIDs. A survey was developed incorporating the Theory of Planned Behavior and distributed to all winter and spring athletic teams of one Midwestern Dill University. By utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study found attitude toward behavior as the strongest predictor of behavioral intention (p < .001), while both Perceived Behavioral control (p < .001) and Intention (p < .001) were statistically significant predictors of behavior. Another finding from the study was that athletes perceived less than 25% of their teammates as taking NSAIDs. Displaying the importance of an athlete s own personal values and opinions of NSAID use was the strongest predictor of intentions. Further assessment should include more athletes to get a better representation of the athletic department.
