The Use Of Ability Based Training In Police Force Recruits, Robin M. Orr, M. Stierli, Kelsie Ford

Rob Marc Orr

The aim of this study was to investigate whether an Ability Based Training (ABT) program derived from the 30‐15 Intermittent Fitness Test (IFT), would improve the aerobic fitness of police recruits to the same extent as current training processes, in less time and with fewer injuries.

Research Review: Exercise Can Be So Demanding, Michael Climstein, Joe Walsh

Introduction: It’s the last week of university and I’m preparing my last lecture for a colleague who is in Las Vegas at a strength and conditioning conference. Hmmph! Just not fair – and on top of sending an email from the poolside reminding me to give the lecture, he has the audacity to complain about the 40°C weather (did I mention it’s been single digits temperature here on the Gold Coast in the mornings?) Anyway, getting back on topic, I’m preparing his lecture on obesity and am including a number of slides on basal metabolic rate, resting metabolic rate, assessment …

Strength Gains: Block Versus Daily Undulating Periodization Weight Training Among Track And Field Athletes, Keith Painter, Guy Haff, Michael Ramsey, Jeff Mcbride, Travise Triplett, William Sands, Hugh Lamont, Margaret Stone, Michael Stone Mar 2014

Strength Gains: Block Versus Daily Undulating Periodization Weight Training Among Track And Field Athletes, Keith Painter, Guy Haff, Michael Ramsey, Jeff Mcbride, Travise Triplett, William Sands, Hugh Lamont, Margaret Stone, Michael Stone

Greg Haff

Recently, the comparison of "periodized" strength training methods has been a focus of both exercise and sport science. Daily undulating periodization (DUP), using daily alterations in repetitions, has been developed and touted as a superior method of training, while block forms of programming for periodization have been questioned. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare block to DUP in Division I track and field athletes. Thirty-one athletes were assigned to either a 10-wk block or DUP training group in which sex, year, and event were matched. Over the course of the study, there were 4 testing sessions, which …

Efficacy And Safety Of A Modular Multi-Modal Exercise Program In Prostate Cancer Patients With Bone Metastases: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Daniel Galvao, Dennis R. Taaffe, Prue Cormie, Nigel Spry, Susan K. Chambers, Carolyn Peddle-Mcintyre, Michael Baker, James Denham, David Joseph, Geoff Groom, Robert Newton

Prue Cormie

Background: The presence of bone metastases has excluded participation of prostate cancer patients in exercise intervention studies to date and is also a relative contraindication to supervised exercise in the community setting because of concerns of fragility fracture. However, this group of patients often have developed significant muscle atrophy and functional impairments from prior and continuing androgen deprivation that is exacerbated by subsequent and more intensive interventions such as chemotherapy. The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of a modular multi-modal exercise program in prostate cancer patients with bone metastases. Methods/Design: Multi-site randomized controlled trial …

Comparison Of Static And Countermovement Jump Variables In Relation To Estimated Training Load And Subjective Measures Of Fatigue, Matthew Sams, Satoshi Mizuguchi, Brad Deweese, Kimi Sato Dec 2013

Comparison Of Static And Countermovement Jump Variables In Relation To Estimated Training Load And Subjective Measures Of Fatigue, Matthew Sams, Satoshi Mizuguchi, Brad Deweese, Kimi Sato

Matthew L Sams

The purpose of this study was to compare changes in static and countermovement jump variables across a competitive season of collegiate soccer to estimated training load and subjective measures of fatigue. Monitoring data from 21 male collegiate soccer players were retrospectively examined. Nine vertical jump sessions occurred across the season in addition to daily training load assessment and daily mood-state assessment. Group average changes from the first testing session were calculated and compared to the group average training load for the 7 days preceding each vertical jump testing session for static and countermovement jump height and allometrically scaled peak power. …

An adapted version of the 9-item Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS) was administered
to Black females ( N = 179) ages 11 to 14 years. Comparison between
body composition (BMI) and social physique anxiety (SPA) indicated greatest
SPA in overweight/obese participants. No change over age was observed. In
comparison to previous data for a White sample, these Black early adolescent
females evidenced somewhat lower social physique anxiety than the White females.
The lower SPA supports the hypothesis that Black females are more accepting
of a larger physique in early adolescence. Factor analysis supported a
substantitive/non-substantitive two-factor model for the SPAS-C.
