Migrants and refugees are an often-neglected specialized population in the field of healthcare, although making up over 14% of the world’s population.

The following paper examines the current state of migrant healthcare, including but not limited to ease of access, quality of care, and the accompanying stigmatization of immigrants in general. It then analyzes current policies, both national and global, influencing the healthcare of immigrants in both the United States and abroad. Finally, a comparison of migrant healthcare in the United States versus Thailand shows how the current U.S. healthcare system can be improved to better accommodate migrants and refugees. …

This brief describes an evaluation that assessed the impact of a peer-driven intervention for young men who have sex with men (MSM) in Myanmar, designed to improve the sexual health and rights of this marginalized community. The intervention and evaluation activities were conducted as part of Link Up, a global consortium led by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance aimed at improving sexual and reproductive health and rights among young vulnerable communities in Africa and Asia. In 2013, an estimated 189,000 people were living with HIV in Myanmar. The overall adult HIV prevalence is estimated to be around 0.5 percent, but key populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM) bear a disproportionate disease burden. According to national estimates, HIV prevalence among MSM is 20 times higher than in the general population, at 10 percent. Effective, targeted, innovative, and culturally appropriate interventions that have been shown to significantly reduce high-risk sexual behaviors among MSM are needed to reduce the HIV burden among this population. This report details the results of a Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) investigation into the March 20 and 21, 2013, attacks on Muslim students, teachers, and residents in the Mingalar Zayyone quarter of Meiktila, a small town in central Burma.

A two-person team, the authors of the report, from PHR conducted 33 interviews about the attacks, which resulted in the deaths of at least 20 children and four teachers. The report details the attacks by the Buddhist mobs, provides evidence that local police officers were complicit in the crimes, and lists policy recommendations for the Burmese government and the international …
