Social Inference And Reading Inference Generation In Typically Developing College Students, Pamela Wagoner Jun 2016

Social Inference And Reading Inference Generation In Typically Developing College Students, Pamela Wagoner

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Although the foundational cognitive and linguistic skills of generating inferences in both reading and social contexts are similar, relationships between these two modalities, and with empathy, are unclear and have not been thoroughly studied. These relationships were explored by testing 30 typically developing college students’ ability to generate social inferences in the Eyes Test (Baron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Hill, Raste, & Plumb, 2001) and Voice Test (Golan, Baron-Cohen, Hill, & Rutherford, 2007), ability to generate reading inferences in the Inference subtest of the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (Watson & Glaser, 1964), and their capacity for empathy from the Empathy Quotient …

Adolescents And Disclosure: Influence Of Stigma And Knowledge Of Psychological Diagnosis, Kyra Trimble

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Adolescents diagnosed with psychological disorders and their friendship groups are understudied. Factors that help a diagnosed adolescent decide to disclose this personal information to his/her friends is understudied as well. This qualitative study focused on the personal experiences of early and late adolescents who have disclosed mental health information to their friends. This study also focused on factors that would impact why, or why not, this group of adolescents chose to disclose this information. An in-depth interview concentrated on three themes: the quantity and type of diagnosis and treatments, health literacy, and stigma patterns. Health literacy and perceived stigma showed …

Understanding Reproductive Health Among Burmese Refugees In Greeley, Colorado: An Ethnographic Account, Alexandra Julia Krumtum Jun 2016

Understanding Reproductive Health Among Burmese Refugees In Greeley, Colorado: An Ethnographic Account, Alexandra Julia Krumtum

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

In the past four years, over 1,000 Burmese refugees have settled in Greeley, Colorado, but little is known about their conceptualizations of health or their experiences with local medical institutions. This paper investigates Burmese refugee women’s reproductive health beliefs and interactions with biomedical professionals. Through ethnographic interviews and participant observation, I show that a lack of mutual understanding between the two groups contributes to issues in communication and difficulties in promoting medical care. Medical anthropological research shows that culture has important implications for the experience and outcome of illness, as well as for the utilization of medical services and likelihood …

The Impact Of Residence On Dietary Intake, Food Insecurity, And Eating Behavior Among University Undergraduate Students, Kittra Gonzales

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

University students are overlooked as a nutritionally at-risk population in regards to poor dietary intake, food insecurity, and eating behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine if residence has an impact on university students' diets and dietary practices in addition to which residence type (on-campus, off-campus, or family home) more closely meets dietary recommendations established by the US Department of Agriculture. An online Qualtrics survey was designed and distributed to University of Northern Colorado undergraduate students. Results concluded there were few yet impressionable dietary differences according to residence type which could contribute to nutrition-related health risks.

Defining Support: Families Of Children With Special Needs And The Role Of The Speech-Language Pathologist, Robyn Moore Jun 2016

Defining Support: Families Of Children With Special Needs And The Role Of The Speech-Language Pathologist, Robyn Moore

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Speech and language disorders are the most common reason for early intervention services in children under the age of five because these impairments can occur in isolation or with other disabilities. Early intervention seeks to lessen or even eliminate the need for therapy later in the child’s life by providing therapy for the child and education for the parents on how to foster their child’s language development. Parents of children with special needs often have more complex needs than families with typical children. This qualitative study seeks to determine what emotional supports families with children who have special needs require, …

Exploring The Outcomes And Perceptions Of Traditional And Post-Baccalaureate Asls Students, Kashia D. Bayard

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

An increase in the number of post-baccalaureate students returning to college for additional education provides a need to better understand this growing population. Studies on program outcomes for traditional and post-baccalaureate students have focused primarily in the medical and nursing fields. These studies lack detailed insight into the student’s experiences and perceptions. Within the Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences fields there is also limited research on traditional and post-baccalaureate student outcomes and experiences. This mixed methods study examined the outcomes and explored the experiences and perceptions of traditional and post-baccalaureate students in the Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences program at the University …
