Long-Term Tapering Regimen Use Of Oclacitinib For The Control Of Pruritus In An Atopic Dog, Piyarat Chansiripornchai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Abstract

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a genetically predisposed inflammatory skin disease with a global distribution, yet it is incurable. A key clinical sign of CAD is pruritus. Oclacitinib has proven effective in managing pruritus in atopic dogs. This case report details the long-term administration of oclacitinib every other day for controlling pruritus in an atopic dog. An 8-year-old atopic Bangkaew dog presented with pruritus, alopecia, and recurrent Malassezia pachydermatis infection. To control the pruritus, the dog received oclacitinib at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg orally every 24 hours for 30 weeks. The pruritus visual analog scale (PVAS) decreased from …

This retrospective study described clinical parameters, evaluated the chance of death (hazard ratio) and compared outcomes until hospital discharge in septic peritonitis dogs that underwent surgery in 61 cases at a single academic referral hospital population. The surgical records of 223 dogs with suspected septic peritonitis requiring surgical intervention were reviewed and a total of 61 dogs, primarily mixed breed (34.43%), with intraoperative gross lesions and cytology confirmed septic peritonitis were included in the study. The gastrointestinal tract was the most common source of septic peritonitis (52.46%). The overall survival to hospital discharge was 52.46%. Admission time until surgery, drain …

Covid-19 Associated Reduction In Elective Spay-Neuter Surgeries For Dogs And Cats, Matt Parker, Julie Levy, Simone Guerios, Gina Clemmer, Thomas Denagamage, Tenley Porcher Sep 2022

Covid-19 Associated Reduction In Elective Spay-Neuter Surgeries For Dogs And Cats, Matt Parker, Julie Levy, Simone Guerios, Gina Clemmer, Thomas Denagamage, Tenley Porcher

Management - TNR

The rise in subsidized spay-neuter access helped drive the euthanasia of shelter pets in the US from an estimated 13. 5 million in 1973 to 1.5 million in 2019. When the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic triggered lockdowns beginning in March 2020, many veterinary providers suspended nonessential services such as routine spay-neuter surgeries. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volume of spay-neuter procedures performed by spay-neuter clinics. A retrospective study of patient data from 212 spay-neuter clinics using Clinic HQ practice management software was conducted from January 2019 through December …

Development And Management Of Canine Adverse Food Reactions And Its Connections To The Grain-Free Dog Food Movement, Savannah Dunn Apr 2020

Development And Management Of Canine Adverse Food Reactions And Its Connections To The Grain-Free Dog Food Movement, Savannah Dunn

Senior Honors Theses

Canine Adverse Food Reactions include immunologically-mediated food allergies as well as non-immunological food intolerances. Although popular belief holds grains are responsible for AFR, the majority are aggravated by the common protein sources found in commercial dog foods. Elimination diets, a time-intensive method in which suspected allergens are removed from the dog’s diet, are the most effective form of diagnosis, though alternative techniques including patch testing and serum antibody tests have been explored. Presently, avoidance of allergens is the recommended management approach. The erroneous association of grains with AFR has led to the rise of grain-free dog food. However, these nontraditional …

Rapid Diagnosis Of Babesia Gibsoni By Point-Of-Need Testing By Insulated Isothermal Pcr In Dogs At High Risk Of Infection, Matt Parker, Julie Levy, Patrick Frenzer, K L. Cooke, Sylvia Tucker, Sarah Kirk, Cynda Crawford Jan 2018

Rapid Diagnosis Of Babesia Gibsoni By Point-Of-Need Testing By Insulated Isothermal Pcr In Dogs At High Risk Of Infection, Matt Parker, Julie Levy, Patrick Frenzer, K L. Cooke, Sylvia Tucker, Sarah Kirk, Cynda Crawford

Diseases and Health

Background: Dogs seized by law enforcement agencies during dogfighting investigations are at increased risk of Babesia gibsoni infection. A rapid and cost-effective diagnostic test would increase the feasibility of mass screening of dogs for infection and monitoring treatment efficacy in B. gibsoni-infected dogs.

Objective: To determine the performance of a point-of-need insulated isothermal PCR (iiPCR) test for diagnosis of B. gibsoni in dogs rescued in dogfighting investigations.

Animals: Two hundred and thirty-three dogs seized in dogfighting investigations.

Methods: Cross-sectional study. Whole blood samples were tested for B. gibsoni and Babesia spp. by iiPCR. Results were compared to a reference standard …

Free-Roaming Dogs In Developing Countries: The Benefits Of Capture, Neuter, And Return Programs, Jennifer Jackman, Andrew N. Rowan Jul 2015

Free-Roaming Dogs In Developing Countries: The Benefits Of Capture, Neuter, And Return Programs, Jennifer Jackman, Andrew N. Rowan

Jennifer Jackman, Ph.D.

This chapter provides an overview of animal welfare and public health problems associated with free-roaming dog populations and strategies to resolve these problems. Placing CNR programs in the context of earlier dog and rabies control methods, the chapter explores CNR’s potential to overcome some of the shortcomings of earlier approaches and to improve animal welfare, reduce dog population growth, and prevent the spread of rabies and other canine-transmitted diseases. Constraints and current debates on current implementation of CNR programs are also examined.

A Study Of The Nutritional Effect Of Grains In The Diet Of A Dog, Kristyn M. Souliere Apr 2014

A Study Of The Nutritional Effect Of Grains In The Diet Of A Dog, Kristyn M. Souliere

Honors College

The present study was designed to address the prevalence of the lack of knowledge for what owners are feeding their dogs, and to determine if grain should be within the diet. It was hypothesized that a bag of feed containing protein at no specific level, with a low level of grain will be more beneficial for the animal, and that a diet needs to contain grains. The crude protein, crude fat, and first five ingredients listed were compared for four bags chosen, and to the nutritional requirements for a dog. “Holistic Blend Grain Free”, contained an extremely high amount of …

Kinetic And Kinematic Evaluation Of Compensatory Movements Of The Head, Pelvis And Thoraco-Lumbar Spine Associated With Asymmetrical Weight Bearing Of The Pelvic Limbs In Dogs, David Alan Hicks May 2013

Kinetic And Kinematic Evaluation Of Compensatory Movements Of The Head, Pelvis And Thoraco-Lumbar Spine Associated With Asymmetrical Weight Bearing Of The Pelvic Limbs In Dogs, David Alan Hicks

Doctoral Dissertations

The purposes of this dissertation were to 1) determine ground reaction forces of dogs with mild asymmetrical weight-bearing of the pelvic limbs while trotting and 2) use three-dimensional motion analysis to identify compensatory vertical motion of the head and pelvis, and lateral motion of the thoraco-lumbar spine in dogs with mild asymmetrical weight-bearing of the pelvic limbs while trotting, and 3) use this information to introduce a subjective grading system for the pelvic limbs in dogs. Our hypotheses were that dogs with asymmetric weight bearing demonstrate compensatory motions of the head, pelvis and thoraco-lumbar spine while trotting, and that these …

Veterinary Problems In Puppy Mill Dogs, The Humane Society Of The United States Jan 2012

Veterinary Problems In Puppy Mill Dogs, The Humane Society Of The United States

PUPPY MILL REPORTS

Dogs in puppy mills often suffer from an array of painful and potentially life-shortening veterinary problems due to overcrowded, unsanitary conditions and the lack of proper oversight or veterinary care. Conditions common to puppy mills, such as the use of stacked, wire cages to house more animals than a given space should reasonably hold, as well as constant exposure to the feces and urine of other dogs, make it difficult for dogs to avoid exposure to common parasites and infectious diseases. In addition, a lack of regular, preventive veterinary care, clean food and water, basic cleaning and grooming, and careful …

Metabolic Labeling Of Rod Outer Segment Phospholipids In Miniature Poodles With Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (Prcd), Mary Wetzel, Christian Fahlman, Paul O'Brien, Gustavo Aguirre

Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD

The recessive genetic defect in miniature poodles which results in progressive rod-cone degeneration (prcd) has been investigated in an attempt to determine the biochemical abnormality involved. In the present study, the rod outer segments of young prcd affected miniature poodles and normal dogs have been compared with respect to the incorporation of intravitreally injected [3H]palmitic acid, [14C]linolenic acid, and [14C]docosahexaenoic acid into neutral lipids and phospholipids as well as [3H]palmitate and [14C]leucine into rhodopsin. In addition, 3 mm trephined punches of retinas were incubated with [ …
