Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background and Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out the cut-off point of the Perceived Environmental Barriers in Community according to basic activity of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activity of daily living (IADL) independence in community-dwelling elderly in Taiwan. Methods: In this study, 200 community-dwelling elderly were sampled and administered with the Perceived Environmental Barriers in Community and Hierarchy of the Care Required (HCR). Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to find out the cut-off points of the Perceived Environmental Barriers in Community. Results: We found that the Physical/Structural domain and total score of the Perceived …

Recovery Of Oral Intake Function In Elderly Patients With First-Ever Acute Ischemic Stroke, Ya-Fang Hsu, Wen-Chih Lin, Ching-I Hu, Mei-Ju Ko, Chia-Yu Chang, Hing-Man Wu, Willy Chou
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Introduction and Objective: The effects of aging on swallowing are particularly evident in elderly adults who are ill. Previous studies have reported that prolonged nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding in patients who have had a stroke increases the risk of pneumonia and mortality. However, few studies have investigated the recovery of oral intake function and the factors regarding NGT removal in patients with poststroke dysphagia. In the present study, we investigated the differences in oral intake function between elderly (age: ≥65 y) and nonelderly patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke. Methods: In this retrospective study, we reviewarticleed the medical charts of …
Correlates Of Vitamin D Status In Healthy Older Adults Living In Miami-Dade And Its Association With Non-Skeletal Outcomes: A Cross-Sectional Study, Johanna Lopez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Examining factors that affect vitamin D status in the fast-growing elderly population of Miami-Dade, Florida, is needed. Vitamin D deficiency in older adults has been linked to correlates of disability, including falls and fractures, and cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the proportion of vitamin D insufficient individuals and their relationship with vitamin D insufficiency in older adults (n=97) living in Miami-Dade. We evaluated the association between vitamin D status and 1) dual task physical performance to understand the link between vitamin D and cognition in the context of mobility; and 2) cardiometabolic risk, measured by …
The Effect Of A Multiple Modality Mind-Motor Exercise Intervention On Single And Dual-Task Gait, Balance, And Executive Function, In Community Dwelling Older Adults With A Subjective Cognitive Complaint: A Randomized Controlled Trial., John P. Bocti
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Cognitive decline disorders are becoming increasingly prevalent, with older adults at increased risk. Combined exercise has been recently explored as an intervention to help to prevent the decline, however cognitive activation in combination with physical activity has yet to be explored. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to determine the effects of multiple modality exercise programs in combination with a mind-motor task and their effects on mobility and cognitive variables. A total of (n=89) older adults (55+ yrs), with subjective cognitive complaints participated in a multiple modality exercise class, three days a week over six months, with the intervention …
Brachial Plexus Injury And Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Following A Fall: A Case Report, Przemyslaw Ilczyk
Brachial Plexus Injury And Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo Following A Fall: A Case Report, Przemyslaw Ilczyk
All Capstone Projects
Background: In the elderly population, research has shown that impairments of balance and strength are common reasons for falls. Falls constitute one of the main reasons for emergency department and hospital admissions, and are the second most common reason for brachial plexus injury. Another common symptom, after a fall and head trauma incident, is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Approximately 50% of subjects with traumatic brain injury complain about positional vertigo. Research shows that traumatic BPPV is commonly misdiagnosed in clinical practice.
Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to present interventions that were used to treat a patient …
Treatment Of A 92 Year Old Female Deconditioned After Hospitalization Secondary To A Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Case Report, Paul A. Naujokas
Treatment Of A 92 Year Old Female Deconditioned After Hospitalization Secondary To A Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Case Report, Paul A. Naujokas
All Capstone Projects
Background and Purpose: Research suggests that older adults are more likely to be hospitalized and to be at risk for hospital-associated deconditioning after successful treatment of their medical condition. This case report demonstrates that a walking program with progressive resistive exercises (PREs) helped one 92 year old female patient, suffering from hospital associated deconditioning, improve her strength, cardiovascular endurance, and functional abilities, including sit-stand transfers, ambulation with the least resistive assistive device (LRAD) and stair climbing. These improvements allowed the patient to return to her prior level of functioning, living independently in her 2nd story apartment with assistance as needed from …

Case Description: The patient was a 90 year old male treated in an outpatient physical therapy clinic after a lacunar stroke 6 months prior. The patient presented with symptoms of vertigo that are common after a stroke, but also exhibited symptoms consistent with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
Outcomes: Overall, the patient greatly improved his abilities for gait and balance after treatment. The patient appeared much …
Current Capacity Building Needs Of Occupational Therapists Related To Older Driver Screening, Assessment, And Intervention, Ranyouri Hines Senia
Current Capacity Building Needs Of Occupational Therapists Related To Older Driver Screening, Assessment, And Intervention, Ranyouri Hines Senia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Older adult safe driving is a growing public health issue; however, the skill set of occupational therapists that provide services to these older clients is unclear. The extent to which occupational therapists possess the skills to evaluate an elderly person's ability to operate safely an automobile is unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional survey was to determine the current capacity building needs of occupational therapists (OT) related to older driver screening, assessment, and intervention. The ecology of human performance framework was the theoretical base of the study. The independent variables were the OTs' training related to older drivers, …
