Background: Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) stimulates peripheral nerves via electrical current to evoke muscle contractions and when combined with lower extremity cycling (LE), creates patterned leg movements. Previous studies demonstrated FES cycling is safe and effective in the spinal cord injury and stroke populations with improvements seen in walking speed, muscle mass, and bone density. Few studies have applied FES cycling to a neurodegenerative disorder, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Purpose This study aimed to compare the cognitive measures of reaction time and dual-task performance among recreationally active, master athletes, and sedentary older adults aged 50 years or older. This retrospective, descriptive study used the Ecological Model of Adherence to examine how client, provider, intervention, and contextual factors are associated with client adherence with home programs, two months after discharge from a campus-based occupational therapy clinic. Twelve participants (M = 60.67 years, SD = 13.68, range: 30-78 years) were interviewed and occupational therapy clinic records were reviewed. The reported rate of adherence with home programs was 25% (n = 4). Point-biserial correlations and Phi coefficient cross-tabulations were calculated between 10 variables and client-reported adherence with home programs, two of which were high, positive, and statistically significant: the correlations between …

We asked 217 sport surgery and 135 total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients to complete a questionnaire (e-Visit) before attending their two and six-week post-operative appointment. Our primary objective was to use the questions asked of patients prior to their appointment to develop a model that could be used as web-based e-Visit to predict early post-operative adverse events. Gold standard comparison was the surgeon’s opinion as to the presence or absence of an event at follow-up. Secondary objective was evaluation of a simplified model. Quality patient education has long been a concern for both patients and health care providers. While many clinicians support the importance of patient education, it is not known which theoretical education model supports best practice. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the Cognitive Apprenticeship Model (CA) when compared to traditional patient education. There were 34 individuals receiving therapy who volunteered to be in a treatment group that received patient education using the CA model. This study explores how to facilitate the use of research evidence to optimize outcomes for children with cerebral palsy (CP) in practice. Findings from two studies were used as the basis for exploring how to comprehensively assess developmental trajectories of children with CP and plan individualized interventions. Seventeen affiliated stakeholders (e.g. physicians, senior leadership, frontline clinicians, families and youth with CP) participated in this study.

Painful loading of the knee during walking is a key feature of knee osteoarthritis (OA). The external knee moments derived from three-dimensional gait analysis represent dynamic knee loads and may help evaluate surgical interventions. However, the relationships between knee moments and pain and the effects of surgery remain unclear. The overall purpose of this thesis was to investigate knee moments and pain during walking in patients with moderate medial knee OA, including the effects of limb realignment and ligament reconstruction surgeries.
