The Use Of Everyday Technology In Occupational Therapy Practice For Clients With Acquired Brain Injury, Julia Ladner, Allison Davis

The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate how occupational therapists use everyday technology (ET) in their evaluation and treatment of adults with acquired brain injury (ABI). Questions included (1) the type of client therapists believed most likely to benefit from using technology, (2) current patterns of technology use with clients, including type of technology and frequency of use (3) the extent to which therapists think ET was effective, and (4) the supports for and barriers against using ET in practice. Fret: Validity Of A Fall Risk Evaluation Tool For Individuals With Acquired Brain Injuries, Desiree Shaver, Colon Mikaela, Irene Leung, Melanie Shea

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the predictive validity of the Fall Risk Evaluation Tool (FRET) for individuals with acquired brain injuries (ABIs).

Methods: Ten participants were included for the study. Inclusion criteria for participants included: age 18 and older, English speaking, 6-months post ABI, ambulatory with or without an assistive device, and uses a wheelchair less than 25% of the day. Exclusion criteria for participants included: global confusion and degenerative neurological conditions. Following the administration of the FRET, participants recorded falls that occurred over the following 3-month study period.

Implementation Of A Comprehensive Treatment Program For A Patient With Tbi To Address Balance And Gait Deviations: A Case Report, Robert De Lara

Background and Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective case report is to describe physical therapy interventions provided to improve the balance and ambulation of a 20-year-old patient with apparent lower extremity foot drop and fatigue 20 months post severe traumatic brain injury secondary to a motor vehicle accident.

Case Description: The patient initially had decreased active and passive range of motion in bilateral ankles, decreased BERG balance test scores, and decreased ambulation distance without the use of an assistive device. Treatment interventions included balance and ambulation training program that incorporated stretching and joint mobilizations, balance exercises, and endurance training.
