(2021) Challenges To Interdisciplinary Behavioral Health Training During A Pandemic: A Qualitative Self-Review, Krystal Vaughn, George Hebert

This paper explores the new challenges that interdisciplinary health care training clinics have experienced for the respective disciplines of counseling and psychology amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous challenges among these disciplines has always included the differences in specialty areas, ethical codes; and practicum and internship requirements. This current qualitative self-review identified three emergent themes from a training/service delivery perspective: Cessation of In-person Training; Cessation of In-person Assessments and Therapy; and Certification Requirements for Telehealth. Background: Moving a wheelchair over a low threshold is an entry-level mobility skill. Observation is critical to the assessment and training of this skill. The primary objective of this exploratory pilot study was to determine if a difference between novice and expert visual attention allocation pattern was linked to the accuracy of rating skill performance and decision confidence.

Methods: Twelve expert occupational therapists and nine non-expert occupational therapy students observed 30 first-attempt recordings of able-bodied persons learning the low threshold skill. Ocean lifeguards have several responsibilities that require precise training. California State Parks is one of the largest providers of open water lifeguard services in the United States, and trains approximately 200 new lifeguards per year. As part of our lifeguard training section’s quality improvement efforts, we conducted a training needs assessment to help determine how well our introductory ocean lifeguard training curriculum prepared lifeguards to perform job related tasks upon successful completion of the training program. Goniometric measurements are widely used in the field of occupational therapy to measure range of motion, define and describe movement, and predict the functional implications of joint limitations. These measurements are further used in documentation and as a means of justifying reimbursement. While goniometrics are a hallmark of our practice, therapist competency is rarely assessed. This study sought to evaluate whether a skill focused, simulation assisted training could lead to improvements in accuracy and consistency of goniometric measurements. Purpose: The structure of pre-operative education programs used nationally for patients prior to total knee replacement (TKR) surgery has not been identified previously, thus hospitals across the United States lack a common standard for this pre-operative education to ensure best patient outcomes. The purpose of this pilot survey study was to describe the content, providers, and delivery methods currently utilized to deliver pre-operative education for total knee replacement in the United States.
