Impact Of Assistive Device Use During Timed Up And Go In Healthy Adults, Megan Dowdal-Osborn Pt, Phd, A Christensen, E Haag, J Halbert, M Olthoff

DPT Capstone Posters

Introduction

Background:

  • Falls are a leading cause of injury in older adults1. The physical, psychological, and financial cost of falling in this population necessitates a reliable balance assessment to determine fall risk2-4.
  • The Timed Up and Go (TUG) is often used to assess fall risk due to its simplicity and allowed use of all assistive devices (ADs)5.
  • The cutoff score for falls risk among community dwelling older adults is 13.5 seconds5
  • The impact of AD use on TUG score and interpretation is not well understood.

Purpose: To better understand the impact that AD …

Purpose

Research demonstrates a lack of connectedness between undergraduate (UG) and graduate students at universities around the U.S. This stems from:

  • A lack of awareness of available resources and programs
  • A lack of mentorship
  • Insufficient face-to-face interaction
  • COVID-19 Pandemic.

UG students have reported receiving little information surrounding their prospective fields of study,2 including the field of physical therapy (PT). Establishing continued relationships among faculty and students aids in retention rates,3 and graduate mentorship programs reduce feelings of isolation.4 The purpose of this work was to develop systems to increase connectedness for UG students in alignment with the PT Moves Me …

Assessing The General Public’S Awareness Of The Pharmacological Benefits Of Structured, Prescribed Exercise In The Treatment Of Chronic Disease, Kristin Lefebvre Pt, Phd, Ccs, William Floyd Spt, Christine Lager Spt, Zoey Stewart Spt, Mckenzie Tirrell Spt

DPT Capstone Posters

Introduction

This novel study sought to observe the general public’s beliefs on the comparison between pharmaceuticals and exercise for the management of chronic disease, as is consistent with the ACSM Exercise is Medicine (EIM) initiative. The EIM initiative seeks to establish physical activity as a standard of care alongside more traditional interventions such as pharmacology. Despite the established benefit of exercise, little is known about the general public's awareness of the pharmacological benefits of structured, prescribed exercise in the treatment of chronic disease.

Objective

Exercise can be an effective intervention for chronic disease and in some cases, as effective as …

DPT Capstone Posters

Introduction

Female collegiate soccer and lacrosse athletes are subject to repetitive subconcussive head impacts; defined as “cranial impacts that do not result in known or diagnosed concussion on clinical grounds.” These impacts may result in vestibulo-oculomotor (V-O) system dysfunction. 1. Describe the evolution of an assessment battery for cleared to play athletes.
  2. Identify the assessment tools most frequently positive in cleared to play athletes and non-athletes.
  3. Provide direction for clinical practice and future research endeavors.
