Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Despite increasing interest in providing interprofessional education (IPE) opportunities for health profession students, the logistics of scheduling and integrating diverse curriculums remain challenging. Several models to address these potential barriers have been proposed and utilized (Blue et al, 2010). Faculty from three colleges within Thomas Jefferson University developed an asynchronous online interprofessional course as one solution to overcome logistical barriers to IPE.

Interprofessional Grand Rounds is offered to third year pharmacy students and second year occupational therapy (OT) students in the fall semester. The course utilizes a variety of learning activities to evaluate the influence of current public health and …

Objective: Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic and degenerative motor neuron disease that affects muscle control including the muscles responsible for head and neck control and swallowing (Kesting, n. d.). There is limited research on the benefits of exercise as a therapeutic modality for people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) (Swoboda et al., 2007) and no existing research specifically targeting pharyngeal or laryngeal strengthening to improve swallow function. As demonstrated by the positive outcome in this case study, speech-language pathologists should be aware that various modalities for dysphagia treatment such as biofeedback, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), and an exercise …

Locomotor Adaptation Is Influenced By The Interaction Between Perturbation And Baseline Asymmetry After Stroke., Christine M. Tyrell, Erin Helm, Darcy S. Reisman Aug 2015

Locomotor Adaptation Is Influenced By The Interaction Between Perturbation And Baseline Asymmetry After Stroke., Christine M. Tyrell, Erin Helm, Darcy S. Reisman

Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers

Stroke survivors without cerebellar involvement retain the ability to adapt to the split-belt treadmill; however it has been suggested that their rate of adaptation may be slowed compared to those who are neurologically intact. Depending on limb placement, the split-belt treadmill can be configured to either exaggerate baseline asymmetry, or reduce it, which may affect the behavior of adaptation or de-adaptation. The objectives of this study were to characterize the rate and magnitude of locomotor (de)adaptation in chronic stroke survivors compared to healthy matched subjects, and to evaluate whether exaggeration or reduction of baseline asymmetry impact the responses. Seventeen stroke …

Occupational Therapy And Family Caregiver Training: The Key To Successful Dementia Care, Catherine V. Piersol, Phd, Otr/L, Ann O'Sullivan, Otr/L, Lsw, Faota

Department of Occupational Therapy Posters and Presentations

Most people with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders live in the community and are cared for by family caregivers who have not received formal training. Evidence has shown that caregiving can have profound negative effects on a caregiver’s own physical and psychological health, including increasing social isolation and decreasing quality of life and wellbeing. If the demands of care exceed the caregiver’s capacity, the person with dementia can also be negatively affected. Research supports the effectiveness of teaching caregivers approaches that match the skills and interests of the person with dementia, use appropriate cues, identify and modify behavioral triggers, and …
