Brain Fitness Program For Aging Individuals: Prevention Focused Program For Alzheimer’S Disease And Related Dementias, Mary M. Eisele

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

The culminating project for my capstone experience was the introduction of a Brain Fitness course. This literature review assessed the public’s knowledge regarding the etiology of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) as well as the need for a program focused on prevention and intervention for cognitive related diseases, such as ADRD. Studies have shown an association between modifiable lifestyle factors and the development of ADRD, however, there is a lack of knowledge regarding available interventions and preventions. The number of individuals in the community with a diagnosis of ADRD has risen exponentially and so has the need for family …

Homelessness is an increasing problem with various implications on individual’s physical, mental, and occupational wellness (Tsang et al., 2013). Occupational therapy is positioned to provide holistic, client-centered, and trauma-informed care to those experiencing homelessness (Salsi et al., 2017). While residents at Valley Rescue Women and Children’s Center (Valley Rescue) have access to a variety of services, occupation-based education and interventions are extremely limited. This paper describes the completion of a capstone experience at Valley Rescue, with a focus in program development and advocacy. Residents of the shelter expressed interest in education on mental health and wellness and occupational engagement. Throughout …

Simulation learning is an online resource that is currently being used in healthcare graduate school programs. It does not replace real-life experience but can provide a controlled environment for students to learn from their mistakes and be better prepared for their rotations. There is a greater need for pediatric simulation learning opportunities, especially during a pandemic. This capstone final culminating project describes how an outpatient pediatric clinic and Simucase, an online simulation video resource, collaborated to create more simulation and video library recordings. Online evidence-based resources can help create better opportunities for students to observe, assess, and analyze during therapy …

Child trafficking has been reported in all 50 states and affects more than 2 million children each year (Guardian Group, 2021). Involvement in human trafficking at a young age induces trauma that has a lasting effect on the victim’s personality and coping skills. A review of literature confirmed a need for more support of the use of occupational therapy with sex trafficking survivors. Despite support for the implementation of occupational therapy in similar trauma populations like domestic violence, homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disaster survivors, there is limited literature supporting the use of OT with human trafficking survivors (Gorman & …

A Capstone In Education: Current Challenges For Occupational Therapist Clinicians Transitioning To Role Of Academician, Jacie Schneider

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

The doctoral capstone I participated in for my entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy program was in a focus area of education with a mentor who was a professor in a master’s program. I supported my mentor in her role as a professor of a physical dysfunction intervention course and had the opportunity to present a module to students on wheelchair seating interventions. Using experience gained during my capstone as well as information learned during the review of literature, I created a guide for OTs interested in making the transition into academia to meet the capstone project requirement.

An exceptional amount of literature points to the benefits of hands-on learning experiences for students enrolled in healthcare programs (Coker, 2009; Doucet, 2012; Thomas et al., 2017 & Velde, 2009). Goals of my doctoral capstone experience (DCE) included: 1) Develop the foundational requirements for Nova Southeastern University (NSU) to increase hands-on experiential student learning and potentially develop an on-site clinic in the future, and 2) Create and deploy educational materials for the students in the class of 2022 to increase their hands-on learning while taking the course virtually. The results include the creation of three sets of clinical reasoning guides …

Occupational Therapy's Approach To Implement A Kangaroo Care Program, Marvieann Garcia-Rodriguez

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Kangaroo care is considered best practice in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), though sadly is not implemented routinely in many units. The benefits of kangaroo care are well documented and include increased weight gain, thermoregulation, improved sleep, brain growth, decreased stress, improved oxygenation, and self-regulation. This project was initiated to develop, execute and evaluate a comprehensive kangaroo care program in a level 4 NICU. The nurses were interviewed within the NICU where the program was implemented to discover that many nurses did have some knowledge of kangaroo care but did not feel confident or comfortable supporting kangaroo care practice …

Background: Healthy child development is imperative for future success, parents/caregivers are at the helm of guiding children down a path that supports health and wellbeing for future success. When there is a lack of education, information, and resources readily available to families there is a risk for delayed development and lack of engagement. For many of our clients, health literacy is low, vulnerability is high, and they often feel cornered with no other available choices. Making it easier not to engage in certain activities, due to lack of opportunities, resources, and/or education. This lack of participation has a significant impact …

Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This project introduces the L.E.G.A.C.Y. appreciative life review model (L.E.G.A.C.Y.) and provides preliminary evidence for its feasibility with emerging adults in a higher education context. L.E.G.A.C.Y. is the first model to integrate appreciative inquiry as well as a retrospective-prospective framework and experiential elements into the life review process. Increased rates of mental health disorders, underdeveloped psychosocial resources, and limited independent living skills have resulted in significant role impairments and poor adjustment to college. Conceptual development of the L.E.G.A.C.Y. model and the results of a quasi-experimental pilot study that investigated its effectiveness with agroup of college students (N = 17) are …

The secondary objective was to investigate if there was any association between occupational balance and family quality of life. To fully understand the multiple perspectives of occupational balance and the factors …
