Biomechanical Basis Of Oscillometric Blood Pressure Measuring Technique, H. Lan, A. Al-Jumaily, W. Hing, A. Lowe
Wayne Hing
Non-invasive blood pressure (BP) measurement has been used clinically for over a century to diagnose hypertension. Compared with the auscultatory technique, the oscillometric technique requires less professional training and is widely used in automatic BP measurement devices. Currently, most of these devices measure and record amplitude of cuff pressure oscillation, and then calculate diastolic and systolic pressure using characteristic ratios and designed algorithms. A finite element (FE) model is developed to study the biomechanical basis of this technique. The model identifies that errors were caused by mechanical factors of the soft tissue and the shape of the arm. By personalizing …

A Conceptual Model Of Optimal International Service-Learning And Its Application To Global Health Initiatives In Rehabilitation, Celia Pechak, Mary Thompson

Background. There is growing involvement by US clinicians, faculty members, and students in global health initiatives, including international service-learning (ISL). Limited research has been done to examine the profession’s increasing global engagement, or the ISL phenomenon in particular, and no research has been done to determine best practices. This study was intended as an early step in the examination of the physical therapy profession’s role and activities in the global health arena within and beyond academics.
Objectives. The purposes of this study were: (1) to identify and analyze the common structures and processes among established ISL programs within physical therapist …

Clinimetric Evaluation Of The Physical Mobility Scale Supports Clinicians And Researchers In Residential Aged Care, Anna Barker, Jennifer Nitz, Nancy Low Choy, Terry Haines
Nancy Low Choy
Objective
To investigate the interrater agreement and the internal construct validity of the Physical Mobility Scale, a tool routinely used to assess mobility of people living in residential aged care.
Design
Prospective, multicenter, external validation study.
Setting
Nine residential aged care facilities in Australia.
Participants
Residents (N=186). Phase 1 cohort (99 residents; mean age, 85.22±5.1y); phase 2 cohort (87 residents; mean age, 81.59±10.69y).
Interventions
Not applicable.
Main Outcome Measures
Kappa statistics, minimal detectable change (MDC90) scores, and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess interrater agreement. Scale unidimensionality, item hierarchy, and person separation were examined with Rasch analysis for both cohorts. …

Controlling Influenza A (H1n1) In China: Bayesian Or Frequentist Approach, Dejian Lai, Chiehwen Ed Hsu
Controlling Influenza A (H1n1) In China: Bayesian Or Frequentist Approach, Dejian Lai, Chiehwen Ed Hsu
Chiehwen Ed Hsu
In this article we discuss two approaches to controlling the newly identified influenza A (H1N1) via Bayesian and frequentist statistical reasoning. We reviewed the measures implemented in China as an example to illustrate these two approaches. Since May 2009, China has deployed strict controlling mechanisms based on the strong prior Bayesian assumption that the origin of influenza A (H1N1) was from outside China and as such strict border control would keep the virus from entering China. After more than two months of hard work by Chinese health professionals and officials, the number of confirmed influenza A (H1N1) has increased steadily …

International Service-Learning And Other International Volunteer Service In Physical Therapist Education Programs In The United States And Canada: An Exploratory Study, Celia Pechak, Mary Thompson
Celia M Pechak
Background and Purpose. Reflecting increasing globalization, some physical therapist educators are incorporating international service and learning opportunities in curricula. This study had 3 purposes: (1) to determine the frequency/location of international service-learning (ISL) and other international volunteer service (OIVS) in United States and Canadian physical therapist education programs; (2) to explore the program differences between those with and without ISL or OIVS; and (3) to examine faculty’s perceptions of barriers to and benefits of ISL.
Subjects. The program directors from 213 physical therapist education programs in the United States and Canada were surveyed.
Methods. A questionnaire was developed, frequencies were …
