Empowering Nurses To Recognize Post-Stroke Depression In The African American Community, Deidra Frisbie, Robin Simon

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

African Americans (AA) have the highest prevalence of stroke and death compared to other racial groups in the United States. Post-stroke depression (PSD) affects approximately 1/3 of all stroke patients and is underdiagnosed in the African American community.

Aim: By using a mHealth mobile app and a Psychiatry provider list at discharge, PSD can be identified, and interventions initiated, thus decreasing the sequela of PSD in AA.

Methods: Nurses were provided education on PSD, expressions of depression in African-Americans, cultural humility, implicit bias, and the importance of the nurse's role in developing a therapeutic relationship.

Results: Quantitative analysis revealed the …

Implementing Antimicrobial Stewardship For Healthcare Providers In An Urgent Care Setting To Reduce Antibiotic Misuse For Respiratory Infections, Ashley Pauldin Jul 2022

Implementing Antimicrobial Stewardship For Healthcare Providers In An Urgent Care Setting To Reduce Antibiotic Misuse For Respiratory Infections, Ashley Pauldin

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Antimicrobial resistance has been identified as a major threat by the World Health Organization (WHO), and antimicrobial stewardship is a key strategy to overcome resistance. A major contributing factor to this crisis is the inappropriate use of antibiotic prescriptions in outpatient settings. Although evidence-based guidelines on appropriate treatment for acute upper respiratory infections (URIs) have been developed, the need for improving provider and patient awareness and knowledge in the urgent care setting is critical.

Purpose: The purpose of the DNP project was to implement antimicrobial stewardship guidelines in the urgent care facility to decrease the misuse of antibiotic prescribing …

Utilizing Multimodal Communication Strategies To Improve Average Risk Women Veteran Patient Participation In Returning Colorectal Fecal Immunochemical Test Kits, Shuntae Hooten

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Cancer is one of the most dreadful diseases present in today’s world. It is responsible for millions of deaths worldwide. The disease is debilitating to one’s physical and emotional well-being. Cancer impacts not only the affected individual but also those close to them. When colorectal cancer is identified early via preventive screenings, it has a greater chance of responding to treatment, therefore, increasing the chances of survival. The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kit plays a pivotal role in the early detection of colon cancer. Schreuders et al. (2016) revealed that FIT kits have better adherence, usability, and accuracy, citing …

Evaluating The Extent Of Fall Prevention Knowledge Of Direct Care Clinicians In A Post-Acute Hospital Setting: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Joseph Henry Mitchell Jr

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Events, such as falls, continue to maintain permanence in countless public health settings and organizations, attributing to unnecessary resource utilization. Proven methods for mitigating fall occurrences transpire through reliable fall education and by creating programs that directly impact these incidents. These agendas are essential and can lessen undue stress, obligations, and associated fiscal liability.

Purpose: This DNP project aimed to ascertain and expand unit nurses' fall prevention strategy knowledge in a long-term acute care hospital, bringing awareness of evidence-based practices through a learning addendum.

Methods: This program, based on a descriptive, quasi-experimental, pre-, and post-analysis, strategically …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) contribute to patient dissatisfaction, discomfort, adverse outcomes, and increased healthcare costs. Despite current protocols that aim to reduce PONV by prevention/antiemetic administration, PONV continues to be a common manifestation in many postoperative patients (Elvir-Lazo et al., 2020). This scoping review aimed to analyze available research on the efficacy of dexmedetomidine to reduce perioperative opioid requirements and PONV.

Methods Synthesis of this scoping review began with a systematic approach to search databases and identify eligibility criteria articles. Of the 21 articles that met criteria, a synthesis table was formed to visualize the qualitative (smoking status, …

Purpose/Background Postoperative delirium (POD) is an acute neurological condition affecting large numbers of surgical patients in various practice settings. Patients suffering from this condition face postoperative complications, increased lengths of stay, and tremendous financial burden. Understanding the contributing factors for POD, and how adjustments in intraoperative agents can prevent or reduce the incidence, is a crucial aspect of anesthesia practice. This scoping review will examine associations between POD and the intraoperative use of propofol versus dexmedetomidine with general anesthesia.

Methods Studies in this review were limited to peer-reviewed literature, published in medical and nursing journals within the last five years. …

Community Health Worker Intervention To Improve Hba1c In Adult Diabetic Patients, Megan Wojtko May 2022

Community Health Worker Intervention To Improve Hba1c In Adult Diabetic Patients, Megan Wojtko

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a disease that disproportionally impacts patients with multiple socioeconomic barriers that are often difficult to address during a primary care visit. Several provider and practice-level barriers also exist including time limitations within the visit and lack of trained staff to help with patient education and case management. Uncontrolled T2DM leads to poor health outcomes and increased healthcare costs. Community Health Workers (CHW) are trained lay persons that can successfully address the patient’s unmet needs and assist with the provider’s recommendations. The purpose of this project was to explore if a CHW led intervention focused …

Abstract Purpose/Background Opioids are commonly administered in the perioperative period to manage surgical pain. However, the ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States makes it necessary to evaluate other modalities of pain management that do not cause respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting and addiction. Ketorolac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can manage pain safely and effectively. This scoping review examines the available literature on the effectiveness and feasibility of using ketorolac to minimize perioperative opioid use.

Methods A comprehensive literature review was performed between October 2020 and September 2021 utilizing five scholarly databases: GoogleScholar ™, PubMed, Ovid, Cochrane Library, and …

Purpose/Background Despite the surge in HCV prevalence among pregnant women and the threat of perinatal HCV transmission, infants exposed to HCV in the United States are inadequately screened (Chappell et al., 2018). It is estimated that between 4% and 8% of babies exposed to HCV during pregnancy become infected (Watts et al., 2017). Incorporating Hep C screening with other mandated prenatal screening will play an essential role in reducing the complications associated with Hep C transmission to the newborn.

Methods Article search was done in the first three weeks of the fall 2021 semester, and a total of 63 articles …

Method A scoping review to analyze data by grouping articles into themes which included authors, date of publication, aims/purpose, methodology, sample, interventional details, and the key findings in each article. Excluded articles included those discussing COVID-19 and case management. …

Implementation Of Lean Principles During Operating Room Turnovers, Makenzie Marshall Jan 2022

Implementation Of Lean Principles During Operating Room Turnovers, Makenzie Marshall

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background

Many operating rooms across the country face the daunting task of making their turnovers between surgical patients quicker and more efficient. Turnover time is defined as the time it takes to clean an operating room and set up the next sterile field between surgical patients. The time begins when the patient leaves the operating room suite and stops when the next patient enters the same suite. Running an operating room is a complex and costly endeavor, and even small shortfalls can have a snowball effect, leading to delays, wasteful spending, and substandard patient outcomes; therefore, it is imperative to …
