The Together Study: Exploring The Relationship Between Ontario Undergraduate University Students’ Levels Of Resilience And Their Experiences Of Diversity And Inclusion, Manvir Ahluwalia

This study’s primary purpose was to assess, quantitatively, the relationship between Ontario undergraduates’ levels of resilience and experiences of diversity and inclusion, and to identify demographic factors most associated with these outcomes. The secondary purpose was to explore, qualitatively, students’ experiences of diversity and inclusion and their perspectives on how these experiences influenced their resilience. Demographic questions, three scales, and (focus group and individual) interviews were used. Undergraduates (n = 276) from 19 Ontario universities completed the survey. Pearson’s correlation revealed a positive relationship between resilience and experiences of diversity and feelings of inclusion. Demographics indicative of equity-deserving group …

Encouraging Movement Opportunities Through Theory-Informed Video Education In Undergraduate Students: The Move Study, Carmen T. Labadie

This mixed methods randomized control trial explored the impact of a tailored, Health Belief and Transtheoretical Model informed educational video on undergraduate students’: (1) motivational readiness, self-efficacy, and decisional balance about changing sedentary behaviour; (2) levels of sedentary time; and (3) perceptions of sedentary behaviour over time and when compared to a control condition. Students (N = 160) were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. Participants completed: two previously validated questionnaires at baseline, immediate post-intervention, and one-month follow-up; and open-ended questions at post-intervention (intervention group only). High amounts of total and prolonged sedentary behaviour (SB) are detrimental to both short and long-term health. SB describes any waking behaviour performed in a seated, lying, or reclining posture at a low energy expenditure. While the average Canadian spends over 9.5 hours sedentary per day, high-risk populations such as university students and office workers report up to 14 hours per day. Interventions targeting these at-risk populations are needed. Engaging in different types of incidental physical activity of daily living (e.g., walking to school or stair climbing) could contribute to individuals leading more active lifestyles by improving their total physical activity levels and reducing rates of inactivity. Particularly, post-secondary students are highly inactive and innovative strategies are needed to encourage them to be more active. The overall purpose of this research program was to explore the use of evidence-informed and tailor-made point-of-choice prompts to promote active transportation and staircase use among university students.
