Dispelling The Malaria-Typhoid Co-Infection Myth In Nigeria. A Literature Review, Olawale Akinola Apr 2024

Dispelling The Malaria-Typhoid Co-Infection Myth In Nigeria. A Literature Review, Olawale Akinola

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Malaria and typhoid fever are public health concerns in Nigeria, with high prevalence rates. The perception of a widespread co-infection between these diseases may be misleading, due to limitations in diagnostic methods, particularly the Widal test for typhoid fever. This literature review examines the prevalence of malaria-typhoid co-infection in Nigeria and identifies factors contributing to misdiagnosis, including non-specific symptoms, limited diagnostic resources, and the diagnostic accuracy of tests employed. Additionally, the review discusses the implications of misdiagnosis, such as the overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics leading to a rising incidence of antimicrobial resistance. Strategies to address this issue are explored, emphasizing …

Transmission Risk Of Malaria Via Gas Flares In Africa, Elle Blake

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Gas flaring occurs at oil drilling sites around the world. It is a method to get rid of the extra gas, as well as to release pressure in emergency situations. The pollutants that are contributed to the air through routine gas flaring can be extremely harmful. Chemicals such as sulfur dioxide and methane are burned into the air we breathe (Baker Hughes, 2019). Not only does this have a direct impact on our health, but also on greenhouse gas emissions. The effects on greenhouse gas emissions impact diseases such as Malaria by increasing the temperature of our planet. The purpose …

Effect Of Insecticide-Treated Nets On Anemia In Nigerian Children, Adamu Onu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Childhood anemia is a significant public health problem in Nigeria and frequently coexists with malaria. The mortality associated with malaria increases when anemia is present. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are a cheap and effective malaria preventive measure that can provide a protective barrier from insects. There are conflicting results from several studies on the effect of ITNs on anemia in children, with fewer studies on the effect of ITNs on anemia in Nigerian children. This study aimed to measure the effect of ITN use on anemia among children aged 6–59 months in Nigeria. The social ecological model was used as the …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Pakistan has an estimated annual burden of 1.5 million malaria cases. The current situation calls for an efective malaria control and eradication programme in this country. Currently, primaquine is an attractive option for eliminating reservoirs of Plasmodium vivax hypnozoites and killing gametocytes of Plasmodium falciparum. However, this drug causes haemolysis in individuals who are glucose-6-phosphate (G6PD) defcient. It is important to map G6PD defciency and malaria distribution in Pakistan to design an efective malaria eradication regimen. Frequency of G6PD defciency (G6PDd) in malaria patients has not been reported from Pakistan in any meaningful way. The purpose of this study …

Target Zero: Why States Choose To Eradicate Infectious Diseases And How They Succeed, Gifty Abraham Feb 2015

Target Zero: Why States Choose To Eradicate Infectious Diseases And How They Succeed, Gifty Abraham

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Realism has remained the dominant paradigm within international relations for most of the modern era, emphasizing the competitive nature of the international arena and the unlikeliness of states to within it to cooperate. The attempts and further still, successes, by states to eradicate infectious diseases--which remain among the most cooperative enterprises--present a number of challenges to realism's assumptions, particularly with respect to the unlikely world historical-times during which the eradication campaigns took place. As such, a two-part puzzle arises. First, why would states, which are natural competitors, cooperate to eradicate infectious diseases given structural and situational incentives not to do …
