Learning What High Quality Compassionate Care Means For Cancer Patients And Translating That Into Practice, Fiona Mckenzie, Katherine Joel, Charlotte Williams, Kathy Pritchard-Jones Professor Nov 2014

Learning What High Quality Compassionate Care Means For Cancer Patients And Translating That Into Practice, Fiona Mckenzie, Katherine Joel, Charlotte Williams, Kathy Pritchard-Jones Professor

Patient Experience Journal

In 2010, UCLPartners, a partnership of health care providers and universities in North Central London, began a collaboration with local commissioners that aimed to think about cancer care and diagnosis differently. Understanding that a good patient experience can only be delivered by putting patients first and working together along their journey from symptoms to recovery, we brought clinical leaders together with patients to think about how to improve outcomes for patients, outside institutional barriers. From the very beginning this new network, an integrated cancer system, focused on understanding what mattered most to patients and organising how it worked and how …

Public Health Service Options For Affordable And Accessible Noncommunicable Disease And Related Chronic Disease Prevention And Management, Sharon Brownie, Andrew P. Hills, Rachel Rossiter Oct 2014

Public Health Service Options For Affordable And Accessible Noncommunicable Disease And Related Chronic Disease Prevention And Management, Sharon Brownie, Andrew P. Hills, Rachel Rossiter

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Globally, nations are confronted with the challenge of providing affordable health services to populations with increasing levels of noncommunicable and chronic disease. Paradoxically, many nations can both celebrate increases in life expectancy and bemoan parallel increases in chronic disease prevalence. Simply put, despite living longer, not all of that time is spent in good health. Combined with factors such as rising levels of obesity and related noncommunicable disease, the demand for health services is requiring nations to consider new models of affordable health care. Given the level of disease burden, all staff, not just doctors, need to be part of …

Data Sharing Between Home Care Professionals: A Feasibility Study Using The Rai Home Care Instrument, Dawn M. Guthrie Jun 2014

Data Sharing Between Home Care Professionals: A Feasibility Study Using The Rai Home Care Instrument, Dawn M. Guthrie

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Background: Across Ontario, home care professionals collect standardized information on each client using the Resident Assessment for Home Care (RAI-HC). However, this information is not consistently shared with those professionals who provide services in the client’s home. In this pilot study, we examined the feasibility of sharing data, from the RAI-HC, between care coordinators and service providers.

Methods: All participants were involved in a one-day training session on the RAI-HC. The care coordinators shared specific outputs from the RAI-HC, including the embedded health index scales, with their contracted physiotherapy and occupational therapy service providers. Two focus groups were …

The Prevalence Of Smoking In Nursing Students, Jennifer Trotter May 2014

The Prevalence Of Smoking In Nursing Students, Jennifer Trotter

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Tobacco use is one of the most preventable sources of death and disease, and yet remains a worldwide problem. With the rising costs of healthcare, the focus of efforts to control them has honed in on lifestyle behaviors that contribute to the escalating costs. Within the scope of this scrutiny, the prevention or cessation of smoking and tobacco usage has become a global priority and a major focal point of worldwide anti-tobacco initiatives. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified cessation interventions by health care professionals as a crucial factor in successful patient smoking cessation, and studies have shown that …

More Than A Diagnosis: Enabling Medical Students To Understand And Address The Patient’S Psychological Needs, Paige Jarmuz May 2014

More Than A Diagnosis: Enabling Medical Students To Understand And Address The Patient’S Psychological Needs, Paige Jarmuz

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Patient-centered care is a framework for providing medical services in a humanistic, patient-focused manner. Although there are many proposed dimensions, it is simply the perspective of caring for the patient as a person with psychosocial needs, not just a diagnosis. Extensive literature review was completed to gain understanding of the application of patient-centered care in undergraduate medical education, as well as the evidence behind implementing patient-centered methods. Aspects of patient-centered care may be taught in many medical schools but their importance warrants a stronger focus. Incorporating aspects of patient- centered care is not only most ethical, but also is also …

An Analysis Of Waiting Time Reduction In A Private Hospital In The Middle East, Husam Asfoor

Applied Research Projects

The study of patient’s waiting time reduction have been receiving attention since the implementation of recent changes in the healthcare quality indicators. However, there is still many areas of improvement the healthcare industry could implement to improve waiting time and positively affect patient satisfaction. This is especially crucial for private healthcare organizations since it has a direct effect on their bottom-line.

In this study, we examine the patient waiting time between the registration stage and the vital sign stage at a private hospital in the Middle East country of United Arab Emirates.

By retrieving the data logs from the EHR …

A Population-Based Case-Control Study Of The Association Between Extreme Heat Events And Neural Tube Defects And Oral Clefts, Aida Soim Jan 2014

A Population-Based Case-Control Study Of The Association Between Extreme Heat Events And Neural Tube Defects And Oral Clefts, Aida Soim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

With climate change it is expected that extreme weather events will become more frequent and longer in duration. The health consequences of maternal exposure during pregnancy to extreme heat events are not well understood in spite of biological plausibility for adverse effects suggested by prior findings. There is very limited research that explores the relationship between extreme heat events and birth defects. The overall goal of this line of research was to determine whether heatwaves (HW) are associated with two major classes of birth defects: neural tube defects (NTDs) and oral clefts. One component of this project aimed to describe …

A Tool To Assess The Signs And Symptoms Of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection: Development And Reliability, Thomas Blodgett, Sue Gardner, Nicole Blodgett, Lisa Peterson, Melissa Pietraszak

Thomas Blodgett

The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the inter-rater reliability of four clinical manifestations of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) among hospitalized adults with short-term indwelling urinary catheters using a tool developed for this purpose: the CAUTI Assessment Profile (CAP). Study participants included 30 non-pregnant English-speaking adults, recruited from 2 community hospitals. Three nurses assessed each participant for fever, suprapubic tenderness, flank tenderness, and delirium using standardized techniques. Based on the generalized kappa statistic and 95% confidence intervals, there was evidence of strong inter-rater reliability for fever (kappa = 1.00, 0.793 – 1.207), suprapubic tenderness (kappa = 0.39, …

Elite Female Tae Kwon Do Athletes Have Faster Reaction Time And Longer Movement Time Than Males During A Striking Kick, Ulysses Fernandes Ervilha, Valmar Fernandes Da Silva, Rubens Correa Araújo, Luis Mochizuki, Joseph Hamill

Joseph Hamill

Background & Study Aim: An important aspect of ap bal ap dolio tchagui kick in tae kwon do is that it is usually performed in reaction to a signal or event. That is, given a specific stimulus (i.e. the movement of the opponent), the tae kwon do athlete must react as quickly and accurately as possible to the stimulus. Reacting to a stimulus requires preparation and it is essential to determine this preparation of an elite athlete to perform a task. Therefore, to investigate this movement a reaction time paradigm is appropriate wherein the athlete accomplishes the kick in response …
