Breastfeeding Initiation, Duration And Exclusivity In New York State : Impact Of Hospital Maternity Care Practices, Hospital Characteristics And Individual/Socio-Demographic Factors, Eileen Mary Fitzpatrick

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Prevalence of breastfeeding initiation in New York State (NYS) nearly meets Healthy People 2020 goals. Improvements in breastfeeding duration and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) have lagged behind those achieved for initiation. Implementation of Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding in hospital maternity care has improved breastfeeding initiation, duration and exclusivity; but data on the independent association with specific Steps have been equivocal. Utilizing NYS-linked data from the Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) and the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), the associations of individual maternity care practices/Steps with breastfeeding behaviors were evaluated. Analyses included mothers who participated in PRAMS …

Relationships Between Breastfeeding, Maternal Cigarette Smoking During Pregnancy, And The Cognitive Functioning Of Akwesasne Mohawk Adolescents Exposed To Environmental Pollution, Georgia Brooke

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Previous research has suggested that breastfeeding is beneficial for children's health and that maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy is harmful for children's health. However, there is not a consensus in the existing literature about whether or not these two maternal behaviors impact the cognitive development of children. Furthermore, understanding the role of breastfeeding in children's development is complicated by the fact that breastfeeding transmits toxicants that are stored in the mother's body, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), to the infant. Existing research suggests that PCBs negatively impact children's cognitive functioning. The current study examined relationships between breastfeeding, maternal cigarette smoking during …

Prenatal Participation In Wic : Impact On Breastfeeding Initiation And Duration And On Infant Weight Gain, Lynn S. Edmunds

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Background: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is one of the most studied federal food assistance programs. However, few studies have examined the association between maternal WIC participation and breastfeeding or weight gain during infancy. Prenatal WIC participation provides an important widow of influence on birth outcomes but also on early life risk factors for chronic disease. This study utilizes a cohort of WIC enrolled infants to assess the added effect of prenatal exposure to WIC on two specific outcomes - breastfeeding initiation and duration and rate of infant weight gain.
