Evaluation Of Education And Other Influential Factors On The Perceptions Of Influenza Vaccinations, S. D. Mills, S. R. Charlton, B. M. Rowley

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Influenza is a potentially deadly contagious viral infection that attacks the respiratory system. The 1918 influenza pandemic infected approximately 1/3 of the world’s population and resulted in an estimated 50 million deaths globally. Research has led to the production of influenza vaccinations. Unfortunately, there continues to be influenza epidemics that are responsible for killing numerous people annually. One reason for the continued death toll from influenza is the lack of people receiving a yearly flu vaccination. In order to gain more public acceptance for influenza vaccinations, it is important to understand the factors influencing the choice to be vaccinated. A …

Alcohol Increases Microglial Expression Of Chemokine Mip-1 And Mcp-1 Mrna, Catherine L. Kossover, Cynthia J.M. Kane Jan 2004

Alcohol Increases Microglial Expression Of Chemokine Mip-1 And Mcp-1 Mrna, Catherine L. Kossover, Cynthia J.M. Kane

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Fetal exposure to alcohol can lead to extensive pathology in the CNS causing fetal alcohol syndrome or alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder. Our previous research has revealed that alcohol has detrimental effects on development of neurons and glial cells, including microglia. However, the effects of alcohol on microglial function as well as interactions between microglia and neurons remain relatively unexplored. Microglia produce immunomodulatory cytokines and chemokines that directly control the survival, development, and function of neurons and glia. In this study, mouse N9 microglial cells were treated with 0.5% (w/v) ethanol for 12-48 hr with or without subsequent challenge with the cellular …

Computer Model For Predicting Aids Among Intravenous Drug Users, Daniel Berleant, R. Ron Goforth, Jun Yuan Jan 1993

Computer Model For Predicting Aids Among Intravenous Drug Users, Daniel Berleant, R. Ron Goforth, Jun Yuan

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Intravenous drug abuse (IVDA) is an important cause of HIV transmission. Computer simulation is one way to understand and predict the spread of HIV infection among IVDAs. We design and simulate HIV infection among IVDAs and the impact of AIDS on this community, and thereby predict future IVDA population, HIV levels, AIDS levels, and AIDS deaths in this group. The HIV to AIDS, and AIDS to Death latencies are described by probability density functions (PDFs) in this model. Factors such as the recruit, quit, and normal death rate of IVDAs, are considered, as well as the infection and removal rates …
