Analyzing The Health Care Cost Curve: A Case Study., Robert D. Lieberthal

This case study uses data from a self-insured employer plan to perform an analysis into the properties of the health care cost curve. The analysis shows that one statistical property of the health care cost curve is that costs rise continuously, not on an annual or monthly basis. Graphical analysis indicates that managed care techniques used to restrain costs can also smooth utilization, producing the continuously growing cost curve observed. The analysis further illustrates that there is no one "cost curve"-analysis must be segmented by population. Finally, the power of predictive models to fit the cost curve varies by population. …

The purpose of this study was to determine what effect achieving the Sphere Standards relating to water and sanitation had on the incidence of communicable diseases in a returnee camp in South Sudan during a complex humanitarian emergency. The water and sanitation infrastructure of the returnee camp was tracked over time until it met the Sphere Standards. The total camp population was also tracked over the same period of time and compared to daily counts of diseases diagnosed in a medical clinic at the camp. Associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and adult health outcomes are well grounded in the empirical literature; such studies generally find both direct and indirect effects of ACE on health outcomes such as liver disease, cancer, and heart disease. In this study, the association between ACEs and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was examined, and smoking was assessed as a partial mediator in the ACE-COPD relationship. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the potential impact of a standardized HIV education program delivered during a provider visit on patient self-management of HIV as measured by adherence to care. Following a baseline assessment of HIV knowledge and adherence using validated tools, eligible patients were randomized to receive the standard of care normally provided in clinic, or the standard of care and a10-minute scripted educational presentation delivered during the clinic visit. While refugees initially receive government aid (eg, Refugee Medical Assistance) upon arrival to the US, they often have unresolved medical concerns that persist beyond their initial period of government assistance (8 Months). To address these unmet health needs, Refugee Health Partners at Thomas Jefferson University started a free clinic targeting refugees from Bhutan and Burma living in South Philadelphia. An important finding from this clinic was that many refugees do not utilize the health care system, regardless of insurance status. Consequently, it is not known what health and social issues are most prevalent.

Allison, Krista, and Zach worked on a farm and surrounding community gardens with high school students from Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN). The 25 PYN youths were divided into groups and focused on different projects related to urban gardening. The groups included social media, marketing, garden/landscape design, environmental education, and construction/ farm maintenance. Each youth was given the opportunity to explore his or her own interests within the realm of farming.
