House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2020-)

The “Clinical Experience” program at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, established in 2017, provides pre-clerkship students with an opportunity to identify and address patients’ needs for social determinants of health (SDoH). The COVID-19 pandemic led to a suspension of the student program in the clinical environment, but the CHWs continued to address patients’ social needs from a remote setting. In the absence of established best practices regarding patient outreach calls from a remote setting, we sought to develop an effective workflow that would mask the CHWs’ personal cell phones while leading to fewer “unable to reach” scenarios and improved case …

Jaime Caro is Senior Vice President, Research, at a consulting firm, where he leads development and application of novel techniques in health economics, multi-criteria decision analysis, benefit-risk analysis, comparative effectiveness, and epidemiology. He led the Caro Research Institute for more than a decade, until CRI was acquired in 2007. Dr. Caro trained at McGill University, where he practiced internal medicine and continues as adjunct Professor of Medicine, as well as of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He is also adjunct professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and lecturer at Thomas Jefferson University School of Population Health.

Diabetes and obesity are inter-related health issues that impact many aspects of daily living, including workplace productivity and efficiency. Obese individuals are less likely to be employed and more often absent from work. Nearly one billion dollars per year is attributed to lost productivity for reasons relating to diabetes including early retirement, increased sick days, disability and premature mortality.

Janine Jagger, PhD, is an epidemiologist specializing in injury prevention and control. Early in her career, her research and advocacy focused on brain trauma and motor vehicle safety.

Over the last 20 years, Dr. Jagger has devoted herself to reducing healthcare workplace transmission of bloodborne pathogens. In 1988, Dr. Jagger and colleagues published a landmark study in the New England Journal of Medicine which detailed the characteristics of medical devices causing needlestick injuries, and criteria for protective needle designs.
