Background: In the United States, it is estimated that there are more than 2 million cases of Hepatitis C (HCV), with over 66,000 new cases since 2020 However, an estimated 75% of those with HCV go undiagnosed and less than 35% receive treatment within a year of diagnosis. In 2018, UK Healthcare (UKHC) implemented a universal HCV screening method using a Best Practice Advisory (BPA) for anyone 18 and older who presented to the Emergency Department and had labs ordered. Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a blood-borne pathogen that can cause severe liver disease, cancer, and death and is a significant source of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Introduction: early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) will reduce morbidity and mortality rates of this poorly diagnosed widely-spread disease. Dysregulation in microRNA (miRNAs) expression is associated with HCC progression. Objective: Is to identify a panel of differentially expressed miRNAs (DE-miRNAs) to enhance HCC early prediction in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients. Methodology: Candidate miRNAs were selected using bioinformatic analysis of microarray and RNA-sequencing datasets, resulting in nine DE- miRNAs (miR-142, miR-150, miR-183, miR-199a, miR-215, miR-217, miR-224, miR-424 and miR-3607). Background: Increase in risk for coronary artery disease (CAD) is a well-documented for HIV-infected (HIV+) populations. A precursor of cardiovascular events in HIV+ populations are non-calcified plaque (lesion) formations and can be associated with arterial inflammation, monocyte aggregation and dendritic cell activation. PCSK9 a known modulator of LDL cholesterol, has also been shown to contribute to inflammation, dendritic cell activation, monocyte aggregation and potentially plaque formations.

Introduction: Needle Exchange Programs (NEPs) have been controversial aspects of public healthcare due to conflicting beliefs and opinions for public policies. NEPs allow Injection Drug Users (IDUs) the ability to exchange their used equipment for clean, unused supplies.

Purpose: The purpose of this literature review was to determine the effectiveness of needle exchange programs and the impact it has had on the reduction of HIV and viral hepatitis infections in people who inject drugs. Aim: To evaluate the prevalence of previously undiagnosed hepatitis C virus and associated patient risk factors in an urban ED through a universal, integrated screening program, to contextualize results found in terms of gaps in existing HCV screening models and to inform future sustainable and effective screening models.

The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of social network factors on HCV and HIV.
