Pregnant Women With Congenital Heart Disease : Pregnancy Outcomes And Proximity To Care, Lauren Schlichting Jan 2017

Pregnant Women With Congenital Heart Disease : Pregnancy Outcomes And Proximity To Care, Lauren Schlichting

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The number of adults living with congenital heart disease (CHD) now surpasses the number of children with the condition due to medical advances and the resulting increased survival rates in infants. However, much of the research focusing on proximity to specialty care for individuals with this complex condition has been with children. Pregnant women with these serious malformations are of particular concern, due to the stress of pregnancy on the circulatory system and the increase in risk for delivery complications. Few studies to date have described the healthcare utilization patterns at delivery and travel burden to specialty care for this …

Historical Trauma's Impact On Dating Violence And Pregnancy Among Urban Native Americans, Shannon Barnes Jan 2017

Historical Trauma's Impact On Dating Violence And Pregnancy Among Urban Native Americans, Shannon Barnes

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Native Americans have high rates of teen births and intimate partner violence, though little is known about how historical trauma impacts these experiences. The research that has been conducted on teen pregnancy and violence has been among reservation-based Native Americans; little research has been conducted on the experiences of urban Native Americans. The research question for this study examined the potential impact of historical trauma on the lives of parenting urban Native Americans. This phenomenological study gathered the narrative lived experiences of participants via semistructured interviews. Purposeful random sampling was used to recruit 7 parenting urban Native American teens aged …

Composite Risk Behaviors That Enhance The Transmission Of Malaria In Pregnancy, John Olusegun Dada Jan 2017

Composite Risk Behaviors That Enhance The Transmission Of Malaria In Pregnancy, John Olusegun Dada

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Malaria causes high morbidity and mortality, especially among the most vulnerable populations, including pregnant women. Malaria in pregnancy (MiP) can be prevented by compliance with the 3 core measures: sleeping under insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), 3 doses of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine as intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp-SP), and effective case management of malaria and anemia. The purpose of this cross-sectional household survey was to examine the composite risk behaviors that enhance the transmission of MiP. Stratified and multistage sampling methods were used to select a sample of 300 pregnant women in Abuja, Nigeria. Bivariate and multivariate analysis were conducted. According to study findings, participants' …

Implementation Of Repeat Hiv Testing During Pregnancy In Kenya, Anna Joy Graves Rogers Jan 2017

Implementation Of Repeat Hiv Testing During Pregnancy In Kenya, Anna Joy Graves Rogers

All ETDs from UAB

It is estimated that a third of all mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV occurs in women with incident HIV infection during pregnancy, potentially contributing to over 37,000 pediatric HIV infections globally and 4,300 infections in Kenya on an annual basis. Since most pregnant women with acute HIV infection test negative for HIV during routine early-pregnancy antenatal testing, they may not receive access to life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART) for their own sake, as well as to prevent perinatal HIV transmission. A comprehensive strategy to eliminate MTCT will require identifying and addressing incident HIV infection. International recommendations suggest that pregnant women in …
