Drug delivery is the process of transporting a drug to its site of action. It includes controlled delivery, where the drug is released at the tissue in a regulated manner. Additionally, it includes targeted delivery, where the drug is aimed at a specific tissue or region to avoid unwanted side effects (that would occur if the drug were distributed throughout the body). A cellulose acetate phthalate coated chitosan bead was developed as a formulation for controlled and targeted release of dexamethasone to the ilium and colon. This formulation was determined to be effective in delaying dexamethasone release until the formulation …
A Review Of Beneficial Low-Intensity Exercises In Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Patients, Carley Johnson, Jody K. Takemoto
A Review Of Beneficial Low-Intensity Exercises In Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Patients, Carley Johnson, Jody K. Takemoto
Pharmacy Faculty Publications and Presentations
The American Diabetic Association standards of medical care for diabetic patients recommends moderate intensity exercise to help manage diabetes; however, this recommendation may be unmanageable for patients who have become inactive or unable to reach this intensity. The purpose of this review is to determine if low-intensity exercises demonstrate improvement in diabetic peripheral neuropathy symptoms in order to utilize these exercises as a starting point for inactive patients. Studies in low-intensity exercises from 2013 to May 2018 were systematically searched in PubMed, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Library databases. The studies in this research have shown that low-intensity resistance exercises have promising …

Pharmacy-Based Travel Health Services In The United States, Keri Hurley-Kim, Jeffery Goad, Sheila Seed, Karl M. Hess
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
The aim of this paper is to review pharmacy laws and regulations, pharmacist training, clinic considerations, and patient care outcomes regarding pharmacy-based travel health services in the United States. Pharmacists and pharmacies in the United States are highly visible and accessible to the public, and have long been regarded as a source for immunization services. As international travel continues to increase and grow in popularity in this country, there is a pressing need for expanded access to preventative health services, including routine and travel vaccinations, as well as medications for prophylaxis or self-treatment of conditions that may be acquired overseas. …

A series of 22 donepezil analogues were synthesized through alkylation/benzylation and compared to donepezil and its 6-O-desmethyl adduct. All the compounds were found to be potent inhibitors of both acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), two enzymes responsible for the hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in Alzheimer’s disease patient brains. Many of them displayed lower inhibitory concentrations of EeAChE (IC50 = 0.016 ± 0.001 µM to 0.23 ± 0.03 µM) and EfBChE (IC50 = 0.11 ± 0.01 µM to 1.3 ± 0.2 µM) than donepezil. One of the better compounds was tested against HsAChE and was …

Natural products and their derivatives continue to be wellsprings of nascent therapeutic potential. However, many laboratories have limited resources for biological evaluation, leaving their previously isolated or synthesized compounds largely or completely untested. To address this issue, the Canvass library of natural products was assembled, in collaboration with academic and industry researchers, for quantitative high-throughput screening (qHTS) across a diverse set of cell-based and biochemical assays. Characterization of the library in terms of physicochemical properties, structural diversity, and similarity to compounds in publicly available libraries indicates that the Canvass library contains many structural elements in common with approved drugs. Low-order high-energy nifedipine (NIF) solid dispersions (SDs) were generated by melt solvent amorphization with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1450 and hypromellose acetate succinate (HPMCAS-HF) to increase NIF solubility while achieving acceptable physical stability. HPMCAS-HF was used as a crystallization inhibitor. Individual formulation components, their physical mixtures (PMs), and SDs were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). NIF solubility and percent crystallinity (PC) were determined at the initial time and after 5 days stored at 25 °C and 60% RH. FTIR indicated that hydrogen bonding was involved with the amorphization process. FTIR showed that …

BACKGROUND: Transcriptome analysis of breast cancer discovered distinct disease subtypes of clinical significance. However, it remains a challenge to define disease biology solely based on gene expression because tumor biology is often the result of protein function. Here, we measured global proteome and transcriptome expression in human breast tumors and adjacent non-cancerous tissue and performed an integrated proteotranscriptomic analysis.
METHODS: We applied a quantitative liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry-based proteome analysis using an untargeted approach and analyzed protein extracts from 65 breast tumors and 53 adjacent non-cancerous tissues. Additional gene expression data from Affymetrix Gene Chip Human Gene ST Arrays were available …

Although the effects of nano-sized titania (nTiO2) on hatching events (change in hatching time and total hatching) in zebrafish have been reported, additional consequences of nTiO2 exposure (i.e., the effects of nTiO2-induced changes in hatching events and morphometric parameters on embryo-larvae development and survivability) have not been reported. To address this knowledge gap, embryos 4 h postfertilization were exposed to nTiO2 (0, 0.01, 10, and 1000 μg/mL) for 220 h. Hatching rate (58, 82, and 106 h postexposure [hpe]), survival rate (8 times from 34 to 202 hpe), and 21 morphometric characteristics (8 times …

Efflux transporters P-glycoprotein (P-gp/ABCB1), multidrug resistance protein 1 (MRP1/ABCC1), and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP/ABCG2) can affect the efficacy and toxicity of a wide variety of drugs and are implicated in multidrug resistance (MDR). Eight test compounds, recently identified from an intramolecular FRET-based high throughput screening, were characterized for their interaction with MRP1. We report that the active metabolite of vitamin D3, calcitriol, and its analog calcipotriol are selectively cytotoxic to MRP1-overexpressing cells, besides inhibiting transport function of P-gp, MRP1, and BCRP. Calcitriol and calcipotriol consistently displayed a potent inhibitory activity on MRP1-mediated doxorubicin and calcein efflux in MRP1-overexpressing H69AR …

Empathy And The Development Of Affective Skills, Anna Ratka
Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications
Empathy, the most important human attribute that matters in every aspect of life, is essential in health care. Provision of patient-centered care requires empathic health care practitioners. The correlation between empathy of health care providers and improved patient adherence, satisfaction, and treatment outcomes is well-established. Scholarly evidence shows positive correlations between empathy and affective domains and confirms that soft skills are grounded in empathy. Empathic students have stronger affective skills and are capable to acquire, develop, reinforce, and display strong affective behaviors, abilities, and attitudes. As an innate quality, empathy is malleable. The level of empathy can be influenced by …

An increasing number of reports describing Escherichia coli isolates with piperacillin/tazobactam resistance, despite retained cephalosporin susceptibility, suggest further emergence of this phenotypic resistance pattern. In this report, a patient with metastatic breast cancer presented to medical care after two days of chills, nausea, vomiting, reduced oral intake, and generalized weakness. Blood and urine cultures grew E. coli as identified by rapid diagnostics multiplex PCR and MALDI-TOF, respectively. The patient continued to manifest signs of sepsis with hypotension and tachypnea during the first three days of hospitalization despite empirical antimicrobial therapy with intravenous piperacillin/tazobactam. After in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing demonstrated …

Older adults are at high risk for alcohol and medication interactions (AMI). Pharmacies have the potential to act as ideal locations for AMI education, as pharmacy staff play an important role in the community. This study examined the perspectives of pharmacy staff on AMI prevention programming messaging, potential barriers to and facilitators of older adult participation in such programming, and dissemination methods for AMI prevention information. Flyers, telephone calls, and site visits were used to recruit 31 pharmacy staff members who participated in semistructured interviews. A content analysis of interview transcriptions was conducted to identify major themes, categories, and subcategories. …
