There is a growing interest in the usage of obesity medications. The purpose of my Capstone project is to provide a simplified manual for the primary care provider to reference to make knowledgeable and patient-centered decisions in the prescription of obesity medications and decisions in weight-management. My methodology included …

Exploring Healthcare Services Utilization And Medication Adherence Of The Arab Descent Americans In South Florida, Haifa Abdulrahman Fadil Jan 2020

Exploring Healthcare Services Utilization And Medication Adherence Of The Arab Descent Americans In South Florida, Haifa Abdulrahman Fadil

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Research into health outcomes of Arab-descent Americans (ADAs) is sparse. ADAs identify as “White,” instead of in a separate census category, contributing to their underrepresentation in the census and the limited amount of research on their health outcomes. In the current U.S. sociopolitical climate, better understandings are needed of the impact of discrimination and Arabic culture, including level of health literacy, on ADAs’ general health and health outcomes. This study employed mixed methods to explore the impact of health literacy level and perceived discrimination on HSU and medication adherence for ADAs in South Florida. In its qualitative phase, a convenience …

Protective Actions Of Oxytocin On Aortic Wistar And Shr Vsmcs, Varun Kumar Soti Jan 2019

Protective Actions Of Oxytocin On Aortic Wistar And Shr Vsmcs, Varun Kumar Soti

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Background. Oxytocin, known as a female reproductive hormone, has emerged as a cardiovascular hormone showing cardioprotective effects, for instance, negative chronotropic and inotropic effects and ANP release in cardiomyocytes and endothelium. However, oxytocin’s effect in VSMCs remains to be explored. Objectives. This study had three goals: characterizing oxytocin’s effect on proliferation, inflammation, oxidative stress, and vasocontraction pathway in Wistar VSMCs; determining oxytocin’s effect on Ang II; describing oxytocin’s effect and its interaction with Ang II in SHR VSMCs. Methods: Aortic VSMCs were isolated from Wistar rats and SHRs. Hemocytometer, MTT and 3H-Thymidine incorporation assays, and flow cytometry were employed for …

Enhancing The Sublingual Permeability Of Atropine Sulfate: Effect Of Ph And Penetration Enhancers, Rawan Saeed Bafail Jan 2019

Enhancing The Sublingual Permeability Of Atropine Sulfate: Effect Of Ph And Penetration Enhancers, Rawan Saeed Bafail

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Atropine Sulfate (AS) auto-injector (AtroPen®) is being used as an effective and safe antidote for the treatment of organophosphate (OP) pesticides or nerve gas poisoning. The use of AtroPen® is associated with several drawbacks including: bulky size, availability, affordability, invasiveness, and administration errors. Previously, AS fast disintegrating sublingual tablets (FDSTs) were developed and the feasibility of AS sublingual permeability were demonstrated. However, AS permeability was delayed due to the negative impact of higher doses of AS on FDST’s physical characteristics. Therefore, the aim in this research project was to optimize the previously developed AS FDSTs. It was hypothesized that optimizing …

Ancestral Dependence On Breast Stemness And Nucleotide Excision Repair In Breast Cancer Stem Cells In Novel Human Model Systems, Omar Ibrahim Jan 2018

Ancestral Dependence On Breast Stemness And Nucleotide Excision Repair In Breast Cancer Stem Cells In Novel Human Model Systems, Omar Ibrahim

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Precocious puberty, measured by thelarche or menarche, is a well-established breast cancer risk factor. Using a unique and patented tissue engineering system we established cell lines from 48 primary cultures of normal breast tissue from reduction mammoplasties and used them as an in vitro model of thelarche, quantifying episphere formation and ductal differentiation. Differential ductal formation was observed based on ancestry. In light of African American (AA) precocious thelarche both in vivo and as we observed in vitro, we hypothesized that AA women would exhibit an increased proportion of breast stem cells, with greater potency for differentiation. Five AA cell …

Analysis Of Molecular Changes In 2 Types Of Non-Tumor Adjacent Breast Identified By Nucleotide Excision Repair In Early Stage Breast Cancer, Manasi Ramesh Pimpley Jan 2018

Analysis Of Molecular Changes In 2 Types Of Non-Tumor Adjacent Breast Identified By Nucleotide Excision Repair In Early Stage Breast Cancer, Manasi Ramesh Pimpley

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

NER plays an important role in remediating DNA damage. Latimer et al., have previously shown nucleotideexcision repair (NER) to be intrinsically deficient in stage I sporadic BC by function and gene expression. Previous work performed on 12 isogenically matched stage I tumors and non-tumor adjacent (NTA) samples identified 2 types of NTA tissue with regard to functional NER. One type that represented 75% ofthe samples, had lower NER capacity, similar to the tumor (Low: Low pair). The other type had high NER relative to the tumor (High: Low pair). Two isogenic NTA/tumor cell line pairs representing these 2 types ofNTA …

Formulation And Evaluation Of Fast Disintegrating Sublingual Atropine Tablets For The Potential Treatment Of Acute Organophosphates Toxicity, Alhussain Aodah Jan 2017

Formulation And Evaluation Of Fast Disintegrating Sublingual Atropine Tablets For The Potential Treatment Of Acute Organophosphates Toxicity, Alhussain Aodah

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Organophosphates (OP) are chemicals found in certain pesticides and in nerve agents such as sarin. Toxicity with these agents can lead to death. On August 2013, 1,300 civilians were killed using sarin gas in Syria by the Assad regimen. The lack of prepared medical facilities, and the availability of appropriate treatmentsignificantly contributed to the high percent of causality. Further, worldwide pesticides toxicity affects 3 million people annually. Therefore, it is imperative that antidote to treat OP toxicity are readily available in a dosage form that is acceptable cost, effective, and user friendly. Atropine sulfate (AS) is the first-line antidote forOP …

Pathophysiological Relevance Of Astroglial Angiotensin And The Endocannabinoid Signaling Systems In Shrs, Dhanush Haspula Jan 2017

Pathophysiological Relevance Of Astroglial Angiotensin And The Endocannabinoid Signaling Systems In Shrs, Dhanush Haspula

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

BACKGROUND: Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), an essential hypertension model, are characterized by pro-inflammatory states in brainstems. While Angiotensin (Ang) II, via activation of glial Ang Type 1 receptors (AT1Rs), has been shown to trigger a significant upsurge in pro-inflammatory cytokines, activation of astroglial Cannabinoid Type 1 Receptors (CB1Rs), elicits a potent anti-inflammatory response in the brain. Both brainstem AT1Rs and CB1Rs have also been reported to alter cardiovascular parameters in SHRs. Evidence of crosstalk between CB1Rs and AT1Rs has also emerged, further highlighting a need to understand their signaling interaction in cardiovascular diseases. APPROACH: The purpose of this study was …
