We present a case of Pierre Robin sequence and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) in a newborn female patient to highlight the surgical technique of mandibular distraction osteogenesis to correct airway obstruction due to micrognathia. The patient presented as a transport after delivery due to respiratory distress. She was noted to have a cleft palate and micrognathia. The absence of other dysmorphic features diagnosed her with non-syndromic Pierre Robin sequence. To solve her upper airway obstruction, mandibular distraction osteogenesis was performed. Introduction

Dysfunctional voiding (DV), defined as abnormal coordination between the urinary sphincter and the detrusor muscle in a neurologically intact individual, affects approximately 40% of patients that populate pediatric urology clinics. Improper hydration affects the specific gravity and concentration of urinary irritants, resulting in symptoms similar to those seen in DV patients.

Methods

Herein, we administered a validated DV survey (the Dysfunctional Voiding Symptom Score [DVSS]) and a validated dehydration severity chart (the Urine Color Chart [UCC]) to toilet trained pediatric patients and compared DV patients to patients presenting with non-urologic concerns. The incidence rate of schizencephaly is 1.5 in 100,000 live births and the rate of holoprosencephaly is 1 in 16,000 live births. Both malformations are rare, but our institution has seen a dramatic increase in both malformations in recent years with no known cause. Schizencephaly is the most severe cortical malformation and holoprosencephaly is the most common defect in the prosencephalon during development however, it is still not very common to see a fetus with this defect live to delivery. Hypertension is a common concern during pregnancy. Beta-blockers are one potential treatment, but third trimester exposure has correlated with an increased risk of perinatal events. Nadolol, a nonselective beta blocker, has properties that differ from those of its selective counterparts, including longer half-life, decreased protein binding, and renal excretion in the unchanged form. There is very limited data on the use of nadolol during pregnancy, and its safety has not been completely evaluated. This case study documents the perinatal outcomes of nadolol use throughout a medical student’s pregnancy and explores the experience in obtaining and undergoing medical care.

Introduction

Adolescent HPV vaccination rates lag behind other vaccinations, partly due to missed opportunities for vaccination and lack of provider recommendation. This study evaluated the rates of HPV vaccination among adolescents with physical and mental limitation and controls, and evaluated differences in parental knowledge and reasons for nonvaccination between groups.

Materials and Methods

A retrospective chart review was performed on female patients age 12-18 presenting to pediatric or gynecology clinics in 2012. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) describes a blistering skin infection caused by the exfoliative toxin in the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. It more commonly affects the infant population and is characterized by large blistering bullae that rupture upon application of pressure.

We describe a case of recurrent SSSS in a healthy term neonate who initially presented with a perioral rash on day of life (DOL) 11 that quickly became vesicular with new lesions on the sternum and extremities.
