Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a generalized inflammatory gastrointestinal (GI) disease that includes Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Consideration of diagnostic choices outside of endoscopy are urgent, and especially so for the pediatric population. A growing number of diagnosed IBD cases with rates up to 25% of all IBD occurrences are pediatric cases. Current available fecal markers have yet to satisfy desired characteristics. For example, thus far, they can achieve moderate specificity but low sensitivity, but they cannot reliably stratify patients into a quiescent, mild, moderately active, or severe disease states. Adolescent Reproductive Health Education During Covid-19: Evaluation Of A Model For Virtual Reproductive Health Intervention In New Orleans, Je Seay, Margaret Carey, R Dunn, Kelly Chau, R Mehdizadeh, S Greene, J Mecklosky, Ryan Pasternak

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Introduction: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, school-based reproductive health interventions served as a key component of adolescent reproductive healthcare (Lindberg, 2020). Many students received limited reproductive health education prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and even fewer are receiving reproductive health education now due to the constraints of virtual or hybrid learning environments (Lindberg, 2020). Comprehensive reproductive health education through a virtual instruction model could increase access to reproductive education for students in schools employing virtual or hybrid instruction due to COVID-19. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a model for virtual reproductive health educational intervention …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Background: This project retrospectively assessed the cleft population at a large regional cleft center from April 2018 to February 2021 using a standardized set of outcomes developed by the cleft team. This assessment characterizes the specific cleft population in terms of demographic factors and the distribution of cleft anomalies. Surgical data regarding age at primary cleft lip repair (CLR), primary cleft palate repair (CPR), and alveolar bone graft (ABG) was also analyzed. Methods: ICD-10 and CPT codes that correlated with anomalies and surgical procedures of the lip and palate were utilized to generate an EPIC sample of 457 patients evaluated …

Medical Student Research Poster Symposium

Background: While palliative care has been established as an important subspecialty, it remains a novel concept to many patients and families experiencing serious illness. The assessment of patient and family satisfaction with pediatric palliative care (PPC) services is crucial to ensuring that the needs of our patients and families are met. Aim Statement: We will utilize a survey tool to assess at least 30 patients or caregivers’ satisfaction with our hospital’s PPC services in 1 month. Methods: A 20-question online survey was created using core and program building questions from the Pediatric Palliative Improvement Network’s patient/ family satisfaction survey in …
