Background: Hereditary Fructose Intolerance (HFI) is an inborn error of metabolism which results in the absence of an effective Aldolase B enzyme. Without this enzyme, ingestion of fructose and metabolic precursors leads to acute illness, multiorgan damage, and possible death. The increased presence of these sugars results in earlier onset of symptoms and more difficulty for those with HFI.

Purpose: The project’s aim is to increase awareness of HFI in healthcare providers using a learning module and assessments of knowledge at three different points in time.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most common pediatric chronic disease in the United States and adolescence represents the highest prevalence among all age groups. Transition planning is recommended for all adolescents, especially those with special health care needs (SHCN). Only 17% of adolescents with SHCN receive adequate transition planning.

Background: Palliative and hospice care resources are underutilized in pediatric patients with chronic and life-limiting illnesses. One contributing factor is the lack of formalized education for medical providers regarding the differences and scope of palliative and hospice care models. Without adequate education about these services, providers are not able to effectively utilize otherwise available resources to provide holistic care.

Background: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS is the fourth leading cause of infant mortality in the United States. There is no definitive cause of death pertaining to SIDS, but certain risk factors have been identified that increase the risk of SIDS in an infant.
