Asthma is the most prevalent disease in childhood and disproportionately affects African American (AA) populations in terms of prevalence and frequency of exacerbations. Air quality and environmental factors are strongly associated with the diagnosis and management of asthma and AA children are more likely to live in areas with poor air quality. An air quality flag program was implemented in a daycare located in a county with a predominantly AA population with a high prevalence of asthma diagnoses. Anticipatory guidance is a well-known and utilized method that has been implemented in a majority of pediatric primary care offices. As the need for efficiency grows and increasing patient volumes climb, there is a growing need for strategies to provide this information effectively and efficiently. Prior evidence can be utilized to identify the most critical knowledge caregivers and parents will require. Our findings indicate safety, communication, nutrition, social development, and behavior as cornerstone topics for anticipatory guidance. Depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of illness and disability in adolescents and are two of the most prevalent mental health conditions in Latino youth. If left unrecognized and untreated, these conditions can lead to decreased quality of life and increased rates of suicide. Researchers recommend early mental health screening to occur in the primary care setting. Through routine screening using evidence-based screening tools (PHQ-9 and GAD-7), the primary goal of this quality improvement project was to increase early detection of depression and anxiety in primary care and initiate early treatment. Sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, education, screening, and management in pediatric primary care settings are of importance due to the increasing number of cases yearly. Almost half of the 26 million new STIs that occurred in 2018 were among young people 15-24. An opportunity existed in a rural pediatric primary clinic, for improved adherence to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations to screen/test patients. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the gap in access to medical care of school-age children and identified a need for community-based health clinics to aid in its minimization. Evidence shows the creation of school-based health clinics (SBHCs) in public school districts provides a pathway for students to receive high-quality care in an easily accessible manner. In pediatric patients undergoing elective surgery, anesthesia is commonly induced via mask inhalation followed by peripheral IV placement before proceeding to airway management. However, IV access is often unpredictable and difficult to obtain in pediatric patients, with attempt success between 35% to 74%. During IV attempts, many dangerous clinical situations can occur amid limited options to deliver necessary medications. Failure to attain IV access may ultimately require extremes such as CVC placement or procedure cancellation. Risk of future HPV related cancers remains high in individuals unvaccinated against HPV, leading to too many people dying from this preventable cancer. However, primary care providers’ strong recommendation to vaccinate and family education about HPV and vaccine efficacy have a positive impact on a family’s decision to vaccinate. The setting for this project was a Midwest suburban family healthcare practice. This process was implemented by providing the guardian with a handout, a short video on HPV, a question and answer period with the provider, and ended with the provider giving a strong recommendation towards HPV vaccination.
