The Future Role Of Cytologists Regarding Telecytology And Rapid On-Site Evaluation (Rose), A Meta-Narrative Review, James Jeffery Fretwell, Liam Patrick Farley, Melissa Perez, Mary Coolbaugh Murphy Phd, Denise Juroske Short Phd

Research Methods Poster Session 2024

The use of Telecytology in conjunction with rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) is currently at the forefront of discussion among cytologists and cytopathologists. In this meta-narrative review, the advancements of Telecytology and ROSE within the discipline of Cytology are discussed. Advancements in telecytology and ROSE enable off-site cytology slide evaluation and diagnosis through digital image transfer. ROSE allows for preliminary cytological assessment during image-guided biopsy procedures to determine specimen adequacy. The meta-narrative review concluded that the combination of these two technologies increases the efficacy of patient diagnosis without sacrificing the quality of patient care.

Improved communication between the presiding technician, the …

Effect Of Comorbidities And Choice Of Treatment On Overall Survival In Elderly Patients With Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Beaumont Experience, Bilal M. Ali, Emma Herrman, James Huang Huang, Mohammad Muhsin Chisti May 2023

Effect Of Comorbidities And Choice Of Treatment On Overall Survival In Elderly Patients With Acute Myeloid Leukemia: A Beaumont Experience, Bilal M. Ali, Emma Herrman, James Huang Huang, Mohammad Muhsin Chisti

Posters

First line therapy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is 7+3 regimen. It often cannot be used in elderly patients due to intensity. Venetoclax + hypomethylating agent (HMA) is approved for AML treatment in these patients. We investigate the efficacy of this treatment in a community setting where patients do not have the same resources available to them as a large academic center. Primary outcome was survival of patients greater than 60 years of age with a diagnosis of AML who received 7+3 therapy versus those who received venetoclax + HMA. Secondary outcomes included characteristics of those who received the two …

An Exceedingly Rare Case Of Bilateral Synchronous Germ Cell Testicular Tumors Of Different Histological Types, Joseph Kim, Ray Page, Gregory Moses, Rod Carlo Columbres Apr 2023

An Exceedingly Rare Case Of Bilateral Synchronous Germ Cell Testicular Tumors Of Different Histological Types, Joseph Kim, Ray Page, Gregory Moses, Rod Carlo Columbres

North Texas GME Research Forum 2023

It is exceedingly rare to find a case of bilateral synchronous germ cell testicular tumors of different histological types, and there have been only a handful of cases because of a lack of connections through lymphatic or vascular pathways between the testes. Here we present a unique case of a 43-year-old man who initially presented to the primary care physician for increasing right testicular swelling. He had a testicular sonogram that showed a large right testicular mass as well as a 1.7 cm left testicular mass suspicious of malignancy. Pre-surgical laboratories showed PSA 0.97, alpha-fetoprotein 1875, quantitative hCG 2508, and …

Lesion Size Inclusion On Dermatopathology Requisition Forms: A Quality Improvement Project, Christopher M. Wong, Henry Lim, Christian Scheufele, Daniel A. Nguyen, Ashleigh E. Hermann, Michael Carletti, Stephen Weis

North Texas GME Research Forum 2023

Introduction: Dermatopathology requisition forms (RFs) are a critical communication tool between dermatologists and dermatopathologists. Including detailed information on RFs improves the diagnostic accuracy of the consulting dermatopathologist. However, the diameter of the biopsied lesion is often omitted on RFs. This study aimed to increase the rate of reporting lesion diameters on RFs from an academic outpatient dermatology clinic to greater than 65% through education, reinforcement, and evaluation. Methods: This quality improvement project retrospectively and prospectively analyzed the inclusion rate of lesion diameters on dermatopathology RFs from a single institution. In Phase 1, data was collected from all skin biopsies performed …

Monitoring Concordance In The Management Of Transfusing Blood Components In Cirrhotic Patients For Paracentesis With Evidence-Based Guidelines, Joseph Kim, Gregory Moses Apr 2023

Monitoring Concordance In The Management Of Transfusing Blood Components In Cirrhotic Patients For Paracentesis With Evidence-Based Guidelines, Joseph Kim, Gregory Moses

North Texas GME Research Forum 2023

Initiative to decrease unnecessary hemostatic agent transfusion in cirrhotic patients undergoing paracentesis: a resident-led approach quality improvement project to prevent transfusion overuse. Currently, there is no official guideline placed in the hospital for the administration of a hemostatic agent such as fresh frozen plasma in the setting of an elevated international normalized ratio, which paradoxically is an anticipated finding in cirrhotic patients. This process leads to unnecessarily prolonging the duration of the hospital course due to delays in performing the interventional procedures and interruptions in scheduling. The goal of this project is to educate and provide physicians with the most …

Immunohistochemistry For The Proliferation Markers Ki67 And Phh3 In Cell Block Material Of Basaloid Salivary Gland Neoplasms Is Predictive Of Malignancy, Robert Post, Zach Breslin, Yanki Yarman, Stacey Gargano Mar 2023

Immunohistochemistry For The Proliferation Markers Ki67 And Phh3 In Cell Block Material Of Basaloid Salivary Gland Neoplasms Is Predictive Of Malignancy, Robert Post, Zach Breslin, Yanki Yarman, Stacey Gargano

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Posters

Background: Basaloid salivary gland neoplasms (BSGNs) are notoriously difficult to classify in fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens due to the morphologic overlap shown by the various benign and malignant entities in this category1,2,3. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) represents a particular diagnostic challenge, as it typically shows low grade cytologic features despite its aggressive clinical behavior and need for more extensive surgery4. We examined whether the proliferation markers Ki67 and PHH3 could help predict malignancy in BSGNs, thus improving diagnostic accuracy and optimizing patient care.

Continuous Consumption Of Whey Protein Affects Motor And Cognitive Functions In A Mouse Model Of Cow’S Milk Hypersensitivity, Geetika Verma

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

Hypersensitization to a food allergen can occur in the absence of immediate allergic reactions, a condition referred to as asymptomatic sensitization. Using mice asymptomatically sensitized to a bovine whey allergen, β-lactoglobulin (BLG, Bos d 5), we have previously shown that chronic exposure to the allergen results in behavior changes with increased neuroinflammation and cortical demyelination. However, whether allergen avoidance can resolve these pathologies is unknown. Thus, we aimed to compare immunological and behavioral changes in sham- or BLG-sensitized mice with or without the removal of dietary whey after the mice had consumed either a control diet (CTL) or a whey-protein-containing …

Continued Food-Allergen Consumption Exacerbates Beta-Amyloid Accumulation In Allergen-Sensitized Appnl-G-Fmice., Afrina Brishti

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, with β-amyloid(Aβ) plaque deposition being one of the hallmark pathologies. However, the etiology of AD remains elusive. While chronic inflammation from recurrent infections or injury seems to contribute to AD development, it is unclear whether atopic diseases, such as allergies, are associated with AD. We previously reported that continuous consumption of a whey protein(WP) -containing diet led to lasting neuro inflammation in C57BL/6J mice that were sensitized but tolerant to a bovine milk allergen, β-lactoglobulin (BLG;Bosd5). Thus, we hypothesized that the persisting neuroinflammation due to repeated allergen consumption would exacerbate AD …

Histamine H3 Receptor Antagonism Mitigates Food-Hypersensitivity-Associated Depressive Behavior And Neuropathology In A Mouse Model Of Cow’S Milk Allergy, Danielle Germundson-Hermanson Jan 2023

Histamine H3 Receptor Antagonism Mitigates Food-Hypersensitivity-Associated Depressive Behavior And Neuropathology In A Mouse Model Of Cow’S Milk Allergy, Danielle Germundson-Hermanson

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

Background Histamine is best known for causing allergy symptoms, but it also regulates blood-brain barrier permeability1 and oligodendrocyte differentiation2. Thus, brain histamine levels are tightly controlled.

Previous Findings We demonstrated that histamine and histamine H3 receptor (H3R) levels were elevated in a mouse model of cow’s milk allergy (CMA) in association with intracranial mast cell activation, depression-like behaviors, and cortical demyelination3,4.

Gaps in Knowledge In humans, food allergies are often associated with neuropsychiatric disorders5-7, but the involvement of allergy induced histamine in triggering behavioral changes is unclear.

Hypothesis Repeated allergen consumption can lead to central histaminergic dysfunction through H3R, ultimately …

Investigating The Potential Role Of Akkermansia Muciniphila Supplementation In Neuroinflammation: A Progress Report, Geetika Verma

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

Gut bacteria are important for proper development and function of the host immune system (1). Recent studies have provided association of altered microbiome in both food allergy and neuropsychiatric disorders (2, 3) indicating potential role of microbiome in regulating Gut-Brain-Axis. Akkermansia muciniphila belongs to the phylum Verrucomicrobia, is a commensal mucin degrading bacterial species (4). A. muciniphila protects the gut barrier by facilitating host mucus production. Since patients with food allergy have increased gut permeability, protection of intestinal barrier by increased mucus production may be beneficial in preventing allergen and pathogen infiltrations, hence, minimizing inflammation. A. muciniphila is well known …

Cortical Demyelination And Depression-Like Behavior Are Associated With Histaminergic Dysregulation In A Mouse Model Of Peripheral Inflammation, Danielle Germundson-Hermanson

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

▪ Demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system are increasing in prevalence world-wide1,2 and manifest as motor, behavioral, and/or cognitive defects3 . The etiology and pathophysiology of demyelinating diseases remain unclear.

▪ We have previously observed cortical demyelination in our mouse model of non-anaphylactic cow’s milk allergy4 . The demyelination was associated with depression-like behaviors and region-specific increases in brain histamine and H3 receptor (H3R) levels4,5 .

❖ The brain’s central histaminergic system is tightly controlled and regulates many behaviors. Additionally, signaling through H3R plays a crucial role in oligodendrocyte differentiation, and thus, demyelination and remyelination6 .

▪ We hypothesized …
