Undergraduate students suffer under increasing stressors despite enhanced on-campus wellness offerings at many institutions. In this presentation, participants will learn that a replicable innovative 60-minute in-classroom intervention can help measurably increase student mindfulness and sense of classroom belonging, which in turn are proven burnout-avoidance mechanisms. Learn how students who are taught to practice mindfulness paired with productivity skills can better connect with faculty in the classroom for a healthier college experience conducive to learning.

This presentation will discuss the implementation and scale-up of an evidence-based Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TSY) program as a part of a larger community-wide safety and resilience-building effort. It will explain the effectiveness of TSY interventions for both clinical and non-clinical populations and highlight the physical, mental, emotional, and social benefits of a modified yoga practice for youth and young adults with complex trauma.

The present capstone project and experience aimed to develop and implement a 12-week program of social skills peer groups for school-aged children with autism at an outpatient pediatric therapy clinic. The program consisted of weekly peer group sessions targeting a range of social skill topics, such as emotional regulation, conversation skills, and collaborative play. The small group format provided an opportunity for participants to practice skills, learn from others, and obtain feedback on their performance within a supportive environment. A family-centered approach was utilized through providing parent resources, at-home activities, and a parent workshop to better support children’s social skill …

The purpose of the Capstone experience was to develop and implement a five-week peer-led building resilience and social-emotional skills training program at a public high school. This program addressed high school students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding resources, social-emotional skills, and resilience. A questionnaire was administered pre and post-program to measure effectiveness. The results indicated an increase in scores, demonstrating a clearer understanding in all three areas.

Per a study published in 2019, two-thirds of patients with autism seen by the Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) at MUSC engaged in elopement behavior, a potentially life-threatening behavior also known as wandering, that can lead to serious injury or death. E.S.C.A.P.E. kits were created by Dr. Pereira and the MUSC DBP autism research team in 2017 to help prevent elopement. Original kits included a door/window alarm, child ID kit, stop sign visual aids, ID bracelet, and printed materials with additional prevention tips. Initial survey data showed that 17 of 22 caregivers who completed surveys after receiving a kit reported …

After attending this session, participants will be appreciate the power of music and witness the level of engagement that street youth in a resource-limited country have as they unite behind a common goal. Street youth in Eldoret, Kenya are at a high risk of experiencing psychological conditions like Post-traumatic Stress Disorder with contributing factors including homelessness, an unstable family structure, and exposure to alcoholism and drug abuse in parent figures.
