Evaluation Of Upper Airway Changes Following Surgical Removal Of The Adenoids Using 3-D Cone Beam Ct, Christopher C. Schultz

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in volume, cross-sectional area and depth of the upper airway following the surgical removal of the adenoids.

Materials and Methods: 16 patients were diagnosed with hypertrophic adenoids and referred for surgical removal. Pre-surgical and post-surgical CBCT scans were taken on each patient. Volume measurements of the total airway, oropharynx and nasopharynx were recorded. In addition, cross-sectional areas and airway depths at the posterior nasal spine (PNS) and cervical vertebrae 2 were recorded. 15 patients diagnosed with no or mild adenoid hypertrophy were treated as the control group. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to improve end-of-life pain management among hospice patients using a rectal medication administration device (RMAD).

Background: Approximately 1.5 to 1.6 million patients received hospice services in 2013 (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, 2013), and almost 75% of terminally ill patients experience pain during the dying process (Fink & Gates, 2010). More than 1.3 million people seek emergency care following a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) each year. While most MTBI patients are safely discharged, a small proportion experience serious intracranial processes. The wide availability of computed tomography (CT) has generated a dramatic increase in the number of CTs performed to identify those patients with clinically important traumatic brain injury (ciTBI), generating expense and radiation exposure risks for patients. To address unwarranted variation in practice, we implemented an electronic best practice advisory (eBPA) based upon a validated clinical prediction rule that appears when emergency department (ED) clinicians order CT following MTBI.

The goal of this dissertation is to examine the effect of cognitive and social activities on cognitive performance and health conditions in a national sample of older adults from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). This dissertation first aimed to identify longitudinal relations between activity frequency and cognitive functioning. Two hypotheses were tested, baseline activity frequency predicts change in cognitive functioning over time, and baseline cognitive performance predicts change in activity frequency over time. Introduction: Pain can negatively affect quality of life for Black elders. They are less likely to report pain concerns and have voiced pain needs adequately met. To better understand the pain management experiences and concerns of Black elders, an ethnographic study was completed within an urban, low-income, elder housing facility. Methods: 106 participants completed a questionnaire comprised of a demographic tool, the PROMIS Global Health Scale (PROMIS), the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), and the Psychological Stress Measure (PSM-9). African American older adults have historically been identified as vital members of the African American family and community (Hill, 1972; Cox, 2002; Waites, 2008). Unfortunately, research has shown an increasing number of older African Americans are being admitted into nursing facilities (Paul, 2004; Feng et al., 2011). Between the years of 1998-2008, it was projected African Americans living in nursing homes increased by 10.8% (Feng et al., 2011).

Context: Athletic participation accounts for 1.6-3.8 million concussions, or mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) every year in the United States. Accurate assessment and diagnosis of concussions is critical to protect athletes from further injury. The Fourth International Conference on Concussion in Sport Consensus Statement recommends a multifaceted concussion assessment which includes symptom inventories, postural stability assessment, and neurocognitive testing. This dissertation examined sleep, depressive symptoms, and cognition in older adults and caregivers of persons with dementia.
