Clinical Outcomes After Four-Level Anterior Cervical Discectomy And Fusion., Tyler M Kreitz, Douglas A Hollern, Eric M. Padegimas, Gregory D. Schroeder, Christopher K Kepler, Alexander Vaccaro, Md, Phd, Alan S Hilibrand

Rothman Institute Faculty Papers

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.

Objectives: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) demonstrates reliable improvement in neurologic symptoms associated with anterior compression of the cervical spine. There is a paucity of data on outcomes following 4-level ACDFs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes for patients undergoing 4-level ACDF.

Methods: All 4-level ACDFs with at least 1-year clinical follow-up were identified. Clinical outcomes, including fusion rates, neurologic outcomes, and reoperation rates were determined.

Results: Retrospective review of our institutional database revealed 25 patients who underwent 4-level ACDF with at least 1-year clinical follow-up. Average age was 57.5 …

Bone Graft Donor Site Infection With A Rare Organism, Aeromonas Hydrophila: A Typical Location, Presentation And Organism With 2 Years Follow-Up: Case Report, Obada Hasan, Wajiha Khan, Muneeba Jessar, Aly Zaheer Pathan, Riaz Hussain Lakdawala

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Introduction: Aeromonas are Gram-negative bacilli often causing necrotizing fasciitis or sepsis in immunocompromised patients. Aeromonas Hydrophila is most often found in immunocompromised patients or those with burns or aquatic trauma. When patients present with a discharge and infection on bone graft donor site and progressive sepsis, an Aeromonas hydrophila infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
Presentation of Case: We report here a rare case of Aeromonas hydrophila with surgical site sep- sis/infection in an immunocompromised 69 years old female, with several comorbids. Here we are reporting infection on donor surgical graft site, sparing major surgical site with the …

Characterizing The Recovery Trajectories Of Knee Range Of Motion For One Year After Total Knee Replacement, Saurabh Mehta, Andrew Rigney, Kyle Webb, Jacob Wesney, Paul W. Stratford, Franklin D. Shuler, Ali Oliashirazi Jun 2018

Characterizing The Recovery Trajectories Of Knee Range Of Motion For One Year After Total Knee Replacement, Saurabh Mehta, Andrew Rigney, Kyle Webb, Jacob Wesney, Paul W. Stratford, Franklin D. Shuler, Ali Oliashirazi

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of routinely collected clinical data.

OBJECTIVE: This study modeled the recovery in knee flexion and extension range of motion (ROM) over 1 year after total knee replacement (TKR).

BACKGROUND: Recovery after TKR has been characterized for self-reported pain and functional status. Literature describing target knee ROM at different follow-up periods after TKR is scarce.

METHODS: Data were extracted for patients who had undergone TKR at a tertiary care hospital at 2, 8, 12, 26, and 52 weeks after TKR. A linear mixed-effects growth model was constructed that investigated the following covariates age, sex, pre-TKR range, body mass …

Seasonal Influence On Postoperative Complications After Total Knee Arthroplasty, Azeem Tariq Malik, Muhammad Shahid Khan, Arif Ali M, Syed Hamza Mufarrih, Shahryar Noordin Mar 2018

Seasonal Influence On Postoperative Complications After Total Knee Arthroplasty, Azeem Tariq Malik, Muhammad Shahid Khan, Arif Ali M, Syed Hamza Mufarrih, Shahryar Noordin

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Purpose: This study is aimed at investigating whether inpatient complications and surgical site infections (SSIs) occurred more commonly in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) during the summer season.
Materials and Methods: A total of 725 patients who underwent unilateral or bilateral TKA were included in this study. A total of 241 patients (33.2%) underwent TKA between May and August. Our outcomes of interest were the incidence of postoperative complications and length of stay.
Result: May-August surgeries were associated with a higher risk of postoperative inpatient complications (p=0.003). May-August surgeries (odds ratio [OR], 2.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.18 …

Background: The International Scientific Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) produced its first guidelines in 2005 and renewed them in 2011. Recently published high-quality clinical trials on the effect of conservative treatment approaches (braces and exercises) for idiopathic scoliosis prompted us to update the last guidelines' version. The objective was to align the guidelines with the new scientific evidence to assure faster knowledge transfer into clinical practice of conservative treatment for idiopathic scoliosis (CTIS).

Methods: Physicians, researchers and allied health practitioners working in the area of CTIS were involved in the development of the 2016 guidelines. Multiple literature …

Active And Inactive Leg Hemodynamics During Sequential Single-Leg Interval Cycling, Nicole Gordon, Chris R. Abbiss, Mohammed Ihsan, Andrew J. Maiorana, Jeremiah J. Peiffer Jan 2018

Active And Inactive Leg Hemodynamics During Sequential Single-Leg Interval Cycling, Nicole Gordon, Chris R. Abbiss, Mohammed Ihsan, Andrew J. Maiorana, Jeremiah J. Peiffer

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Introduction Leg order during sequential single-leg cycling (i.e., exercising both legs independently within a single session) may affect local muscular responses potentially influencing adaptations. This study examined the cardiovascular and skeletal muscle hemodynamic responses during double-leg and sequential single-leg cycling. Methods Ten young healthy adults (28 ± 6 yr) completed six 1-min double-leg intervals interspersed with 1 min of passive recovery and, on a separate occasion, 12 (six with one leg followed by six with the other leg) 1-min single-leg intervals interspersed with 1 min of passive recovery. Oxygen consumption, heart rate, blood pressure, muscle oxygenation, muscle blood volume, and …
