Short-Term Pain Outcomes In Robotic Versus Manual Total Hip Arthroplasty, Brienne Paradis Oms3, Andrea M. Bodine Md

Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery

Background: Four-hundred-fifty-thousand patients annually undergo total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the United States. THA has been shown to alleviate pain, restore function, and improve quality of life. Manual implant postoperative complications have led to a need for more advanced technology. Robotic assisted THA has the potential for greater accuracy in component positioning compared to manual. Comparing robotic and manual THA, significant differences have been shown in hip-specific functional outcomes, component positioning, complications, and patient-centered outcomes. The effects of these techniques on differences from baseline pain have yet to be investigated.

Methods: A retrospective review of the Berkshire Medical Center electronic …

The Effects Of Vitamin D Supplementation On Athletic Performance And Injury Prevention, Amani Adeeb Abushamma Jun 2022

The Effects Of Vitamin D Supplementation On Athletic Performance And Injury Prevention, Amani Adeeb Abushamma

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Vitamin D supplementation has numerous effects on athletic performance and plays a significant role in preventing an athlete’s risk of getting injuries. Vitamin D has an impact on numerous physiological functions such as: bone health, muscle function, inflammatory response, and immune function. An athlete’s bone and muscle health are essential for maximum performance and career success. A bone fracture due to vitamin D deficiency can delay an athlete’s training and ultimately inhibit obtaining a collegiate scholarship and/or contract. A cross sectional study found that more than half of athletic trainers did not view 25-hydroxyvitamin D(25[OH]) testing and vitamin D supplementation …

The Rationale Behind And Impact Of One Hospital’S Provision Of Secondary School Athletic Training Services: A Five-Year Case Study, Caroline E. Faure Edd; Atc

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Sports-related injuries are common and often require physician or hospital care. Since the advent of concussion laws in fifty states, hospitals across the country have come forward to partner with secondary schools in the provision of sports medicine healthcare. The outreach agreements are consistent: Hospitals hire athletic trainers (ATs) and then outsource them to schools. ATs help mitigate risk in sports programs. Onsite at the schools daily, ATs provide immediate evaluation and treatment for injuries that occur and render decisions regarding the appropriateness of an injured athlete’s return to participation. The goal of this case study was to describe …

Does Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Reduce Surgical Site Infection Rates In The Trauma Patient? A Southeast Asian Experience., Chenghan Wu, Kelvin Kah Ho Lor, Eugene Weiren Yang, Allan Shao Hui Ng

BioMedicine

Abstract

Introduction:

The trauma patient has an increased susceptibility to postoperative surgical site infection (SSI). There is a lack of studies in the literature investigating the rates of SSI in minimally invasive spine (MIS) surgery for trauma patients with thoracolumbar fractures with other concomitant injuries. We aim to investigate if MIS surgery for trauma patients reduces the incidence of SSI through a less invasive approach and smaller surgical incision.

Methods:

A case series of 30 trauma patients who underwent MIS surgery for thoracolumbar spine fractures at our center were followed up for a year. The primary outcome measured was the …

Adult Pulmonary Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis With Osseous Involvement: Understanding This Rare Mimic Of Malignancy, Samantha A. Smith Ms Iii, Adam M. Franks Md, William Rollyson Ms Iv, Doreen Griswold, Tammy Bannister Md

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Langerhans cells are dendritic cells that form the antigenic barrier of the human body. They occur in nearly any tissue but are most prevalent in the skin, submucosa of the bronchial tree, and other mucosae. Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) develops when these cells damage the tissues in which they reside through a combination of inflammatory and monoclonal stimulation. The pulmonary variant of LCH involves the lung parenchyma and creates a wide variety of disturbances: pulmonary hypertension and both obstructive and restrictive lung disease. Osseous involvement, in addition to the pulmonary variant, presents with pulmonary masses and lytic bone lesions, which …
