Study design: A randomized double blind repeated measures, case series study of whole body vibration (WBV) in the assisted living elderly.

Background: A single exposure to WBV has been shown to have benefit with respect to muscle activity, strength, balance, and power in some studies while other studies have found no benefit. Its overall effectiveness is unknown due to the conflicting findings reported in the literature.

Case description: Six subjects (5 female, 1 male; mean age = 85.4) in an assisted living community volunteered to participate. Subjects were exposed to a single bout of WBV at 0, 2, 20, and …

Perioperative Nonopioid Agents For Pain Control In Spinal Surgery., Anna Rivkin, Mark Rivkin Dec 2015

Perioperative Nonopioid Agents For Pain Control In Spinal Surgery., Anna Rivkin, Mark Rivkin

Mark Rivkin

PURPOSE: Commonly used nonopioid analgesic agents that are incorporated into multimodal perioperative pain management protocols in spinal surgery are reviewed. SUMMARY: Spinal procedures constitute perhaps some of most painful surgical interventions, as they often encompass extensive muscle dissection, tissue retraction, and surgical implants, as well as prolonged operative duration. Perioperative nonopioid analgesics frequently used in multimodal protocols include gabapentin, pregabalin, acetaminophen, dexamethasone, ketamine, and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). There is evidence to suggest that gabapentin is safe and effective in reducing opioid consumption and pain scores at optimal doses of 600-900 mg orally administered preoperatively. Pregabalin 150-300 mg orally perioperatively …

Allan D. Abbott

Background and Purpose. This study sought to answer the following questions: What are the outcomes of physiotherapy post lumbar total disc replacement (LTDR) compared with patient self-mediated rehabilitation? Is a difference in outcomes related to the number of physiotherapy sessions? Methods. This is a retrospective observational study of 600 patients post TDR. Patient outcomes for self-mediated rehabilitation (Group 1), 1–3 sessions of clinicbased physiotherapy (Group 2) and ≥4 sessions of clinic-based physiotherapy (Group 3) were analysed. Outcomes measures included the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMQ), Short Form-36 Physical (SF-36 PCS) and Mental Subscale Components (SF-36 MCS), …

Nanospiderwebs: Artificial 3d Extracellular Matrix From Nanofibers By Novel Clinical Grade Electrospinning For Stem Cell Delivery, Mohammad Alamein, Qin Liu, Sebastien Stephens, Stuart Skabo, Frauke Warnke, Robert Bourke, Peter Heiner, Patrick Warnke

Qin Liu

Novel clinical grade electrospinning methods could provide three-dimensional (3D) nanostructured biomaterials comprising of synthetic or natural biopolymer nanofibers. Such advanced materials could potentially mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) accurately and may provide superior niche-like spaces on the subcellular scale for optimal stem-cell attachment and individual cell homing in regenerative therapies. The goal of this study was to design several novel “nanofibrous extracellular matrices” (NF-ECMs) with a natural mesh-like 3D architecture through a unique needle-free multi-jet electrospinning method in highly controlled manner to comply with good manufacturing practices (GMP) for the production of advanced healthcare materials for regenerative medicine, and …

Qin Liu

The transplantation of human stem cells seeded on biomaterials holds promise for many clinical applications in cranio-maxillo-facial tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, stem cell propagation necessary to produce sufficient cell numbers currently utilizes fetal calf serum (FCS) as a growth supplement which may subsequently transmit animal pathogens. Human platelet lysate (HPL) could potentially be utilized to produce clinical-grade stem cell-loaded biomaterials as an appropriate FCS substitute that is in line with clinically-applicable practice. The goal of this study was to investigate whether HPL can be successfully used to propagate human mesenchymal stem cells (HMSCs) seeded on clinically-approved collagen materials …

Extract: Anatomical variations of the sternocleidomastoid muscle are rare and concern its origin, insertion, and the number of heads. We report on a rare bilateral variant of the sternocleidomastoid muscle with aberrant and supernumerary muscular heads, observed in a cadaveric subject. On the right side of the neck, a typical sternomastoid head of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and three aberrant clavicular heads of variable thickness, origin, and termination were noticed. On the left side, two sternomastoid heads were present; the medial one was of typical pattern, while the lateral was supernumerary. The cleidomastoid portion of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle was fused …
