The objectives for this CNL Internship Project were to: (1) identify the strongest contributors to the rising trend of Clostridium difficile cases on this medical-surgical unit, (2) review all Clostridium difficile cases for correlational factors that are of significant relevance, (3) examine current unit practices and adherence to established policies, and (4) provide recommendations for enhancing existing prevention strategies. The population examined included male adults between 56-83 years old being treated for other medical conditions. Abstract
A clinical nurse leader (CNL) project was conducted, in a medical-surgical oncology unit in a community-based hospital, to evaluate and improve upon the decreasing number of chemotherapy certified nurses. A Likert survey of the nurses provided a self-assessment of competency in handling chemotherapy patients, and perceived barriers to achieving chemotherapy certification. The surveys revealed that nurses felt fearful of exposure to hazardous medications, that chemotherapy assignments were too stressful, and that there was minimal chemotherapy competency amongst leadership. The title of the clinical nurse leader project is “I’m a Big Kid Now: Enhancing Transition RN Residents’ Confidence During Pediatric Patient Care”. The project aims to improve the support components for Transition RN residents during their Transition RN Residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. The clinical leadership theme that correlates to this project is communication. The clinical nurse leader’s role is to act as an educator and a facilitator throughout this project.
