Exploring Accessibility And Social Inclusion For Children With Hearing Impairments In Residential Camps Through The Occupational Therapy Lens, Tiffany Coles
Student Capstone Papers
Children are encouraged to engage in various play, leisure, and social participation activities to enhance the development of life skills, independence, and social skills. A common leisure and social participation activity for children aged 6 to 18-years-old is to attend residential camp. Residential camps provide children a structured opportunity to engage in leisure activities while learning to become independent and self-confident when socializing and making new friends. Attending camp can be a fun and engaging environment to help accelerate growth in key developmental outcomes, such as positive identity, social skills, physical skills, positive values, and spirituality.
Within the residential camp …
Providing A Safe Space For Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Alexis Garcia
Providing A Safe Space For Children Who Have Experienced Trauma, Alexis Garcia
Honors Theses
Health care professionals are continuing to learn about childhood trauma and the implications on health and development. With time, there has become a better understanding of how to determine and provide the resources needed for families and children who have experienced childhood trauma. Additionally, information about childhood trauma is slowly being understood throughout public school districts. This allows teachers to better understand children and accommodate their needs. This honors thesis will discuss childhood trauma and the development of a resource that can be used to provide elementary school-aged students with a place to go when they need assistance with regulation. …
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: A Guide For Caregivers, Camryn Keane
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: A Guide For Caregivers, Camryn Keane
Honors Theses
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a condition that affects infants who have faced exposure to certain drugs in utero. The incidence of NAS is dramatically rising in the United States. This increase is primarily due to the growth in opioid prescribing to pregnant women. NAS has an immediate effect on four primary areas of occupation: activities of daily living (ADLs), sleep, social participation, and play. This paper aims to review the background of NAS, then describe how this condition impacts an infant’s occupational performance. Moreover, this paper identifies models of occupational therapy intervention that can guide the treatment of NAS. …

Theses and Dissertations
Approximately 88,0000 manual wheelchair (MWC) users are under the age of 21 in the United States (Kaye, LaPlante, & Kang, 2000). More than half of pediatric MWC users with spinal cord injury (SCI) report shoulder pain later in life and are at higher risk for developing upper extremity (UE) overuse injuries (Vogel & Zebracki, 2015). During MWC propulsion, a stroke pattern is the path the hand follows with respect to the pushrim (Boninger et al., 2002). Current clinical guidelines for adults recommend sole use of the semicircular stroke pattern as best practices because a MWC user is able to spend …

Occupational Therapy And Accessibility In The Outdoors And Summer Camps, David M. Lewis
Occupational Therapy And Accessibility In The Outdoors And Summer Camps, David M. Lewis
Student Capstone Papers
Opportunities for positive youth development (PYD) are promoted through both outdoor and camp experiences. The experiences provided by the outdoors and camps are ideal for developing physically, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. These areas of PYD are further generalizable to several aspects of occupational performance and participation, while continuing to have benefits throughout the lifespan. While the outdoors and camps provide these valuable opportunities for development, the environments and contexts of these opportunities are often limiting factors for individuals with disabilities. Utilizing an occupational therapy approach allows for further understanding of how to promote inclusion and accessibility practices in these …

Clinical Predictors Of Driving Simulator Performance In Drivers With Multiple Sclerosis, Sarah Krasniuk
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Drivers with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) experience visual-cognitive impairment that may impact their fitness to drive. Fitness to drive is the ability to control a motor vehicle, as determined via a comprehensive driving evaluation, with in-clinic and on-road driving assessments. However, the on-road driving assessment may pose a crash risk to medically at-risk drivers. Instead, a driving simulator assessment that targets the driving performance deficits of drivers may inform fitness to drive decisions. However, utilizing clinical tests to indicate driving simulator performance in drivers with MS is not fully understood.
Through three aims, this dissertation will examine the clinical utility of …

Adolescence is a time of rapid and tumultuous development in the physical, cognitive and psychosocial domains. Sustaining a concussion during this time period may complicate this development, particularly when symptoms are prolonged. Of particular importance is the study of adolescent females, as this population has been under-evaluated within the literature. This is especially troubling due to the number of concussions that occur among adolescent females, as concussions within this population reportedly occur at twice the frequency of adolescent males. This dissertation presents a qualitative case study investigation that explores the recovery experiences of adolescent female athletes who have sustained a …

The Adult Public’S Perception Of The Utility Of Play Therapy, Margaret L. Hindman
The Adult Public’S Perception Of The Utility Of Play Therapy, Margaret L. Hindman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Children communicate through symbolism and play as toys are children's words and play is their language (Landreth, 2012; Oaklander, 1988; Piaget, 1951; Ray, 2016). Play therapists facilitate developmentally appropriate support for children (Landreth, 2012). Often parents are unaware of the importance of play in children’s counseling (Brumfield & Christensen, 2011; Landreth, Bratton, Kellam, & Blackard, 2006).
Since adults often make decisions for children, it is important to know adults’ perceptions of play therapy utility. There is little research on parents’ knowledge of mental health services especially research specific to play therapy (Gallo, Comer, & Barlow, 2013; O’Connor & Langer, 2018). …
