Field Notes: A Journal of Collegiate Anthropology

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most frequently occurring endocrine disorders in women. The syndrome is diagnosed through a heterogeneous combination of androgen excess, anovulation, and ovarian dysfunction and is characterized by a host of resulting markers. This paper will paint the overall diagnostic picture of the condition and review a number of these markers to build an essential picture of PCOS. It will concentrate first on its principal metabolic markers then describe its physical, neurological and psychobehavioral markers. Each section will then abstract an essential picture from the data it presents. Finally, the review will conclude with …

Widely recognized as the most deathful gynecologic malignancy affecting women worldwide, ovarian cancer has reported a significant decline in terms of prevalence and incidence in the last decades. This fact has been especially explained by to the use of menopausal hormonal therapy and of oral contraceptives in association with genetic, oncologic and gynecologic counseling. The aim of the current review is to discuss about actual ovarian cancer prevention and screening tools. For this reason, we reviewed several data related to ovarian cancer, such as: incidence and risk factors, histopathological types (epithelial with high- and low-grade serous carcinomas, clear cell carcinoma, …

Effects Of Maternal-Infant Golden Hour On Breastfeeding, Julina A. Wall-Penner, Katilyn Rasmussen, Madeline Suderman

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

Abstract

This study examines the effects of immediate maternal-infant skin-to-skin contact, and how those effects compare to mothers and babies who have delayed or skin-to-skin. Skin-to-skin contact, also known as “the golden hour”, is a remarkable practice that occurs immediately after birth. During this intimate bonding experience, the newborn is placed directly on the mother's chest, their tiny body nestled against her warm skin. Studies have shown numerous benefits from this practice. Breastfeeding success through early initiation is one the benefits this study focuses on. This cohort observational study is recommended to take place at Hays Medical Center with mothers …

Ogilvie's Syndrome: Acute Colonic Pseudoobstruction. A Review For Residents., Tyler Bayliss, Caleb Clark, Errington C. Thompson

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Ogilvie's syndrome (acute colonic pseudoobstruction) was first described in 1948. Acute colonic pseudoobstruction can occur in a variety of clinical settings, including postsurgical, obstetrics, pelvic surgery, critical care and sepsis. Clinicians need to recognize the syndrome early. Colonic distention without evidence of obstruction can be seen on plain films of the abdomen or CT scan. Successful therapies, including bowel rest, neostigmine and colonoscopic decompression, have been used. Avoiding respiratory compromise from abdominal distention and colonic perforation of the primary goals of treatment. Surgical intervention should be reserved for patients who are refractory to medical treatment or develops signs and symptoms …

Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Background: The removal of the uterus by surgical procedures is the standard treatment for endometrial cancer, which is the most common type of malignant gynecological tumor. Surgery for early-stage endometrial cancer often involves a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, with or without bilateral pelvic/para-aortic lymphadenectomy. In some cases, the patient may also have bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy. Aim and objectives: The objective of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of radical hysterectomy with or without pelvic lymphadenectomy in the treatment of stage II endometrial cancer. Both approaches were examined in terms of the adverse effects they produced, as well …

Al-Azhar International Medical Journal

Background: Any imaging method that is now available can be used to diagnose malignancies that originate in the bones. Plain radiography is the imaging modality that is utilized the vast majority of the time in order to arrive at a diagnosis and identify the characteristics of a variety of osseous lesions. The diagnosis of bone cancer can be challenging, but CT scans can provide useful information about the anatomical breadth of the disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the test that is considered to be the gold standard when it comes to diagnosing cancer and anomalies in the skeleton that …

Background: In most cases, hot polypectomy is used to treat colon polyps that are more than 1 centimeter in diameter. Electrocautery-induced damage accounts for the majority of adverse outcomes, including prolonged bleeding, post-polypectomy syndrome, and perforation. We postulated that cold resection of big polyps would be as effective as hot polypectomy while being significantly safer for the patient. Aim and objectives: for the purpose of comparing the rates of intraoperative bleeding, clinically significant postoperative bleeding, and perforation between Cold Snaring Polypectomy and Hot Snaring Polypectomy in patients with non-pedunculated colorectal polyps of 10 mm or larger. Subjects and methods: Prospective …

Background and aim: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is distinguished by hyperandrogenism, oligomenorrhea, and a cystic ovarian morphology. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is more likely to occur in women with PCOS who undergo IVF. The utilization of hCG to begin the ovum's ultimate maturation is a significant mechanism in OHSS . The ESHRE guidelines recommend that in women with PCOS undergoing ICSI/IVF treatment the gonadotrophine releasing hormone antagonist protocol is optimal or superior to gonadotrophin releasing agonist long protocol. In this study we aimed to Compare pregnancy rate between classical (standard) antagonist protocol to agonist stop/antagonist protocol in women with PCOS …
