Purpose

This quantitative study will seek to provide valuable insight into the needs and preferences of Hispanic women during labor with the potential benefit of doula support in minimizing their pain.

Methods

A quasi-experimental design study will be conducted, randomizing a convenient sample into two groups consisting of one experimental and one control group, with the objective of evaluating the efficacy of doula presence as a source for pain management in Hispanic women. Adverse birth outcomes for both the parent and the child disproportionately affect people of color. Evidence demonstrates that one of the ways to mitigate these negative consequences is through the utilization of a doula, a trained birth companion that is not a medical provider but whose role it is to physically and emotionally support the patient through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Background/Purpose: The unacceptably high maternal mortality rate in the United States has demanded a call to action for evaluation and implementation of efforts to improve both maternal and neonatal outcomes. Low-resource and low-socioeconomic populations are at a higher risk of experiencing adverse birth outcomes. Doulas have continuously been recognized as key tools in improving outcomes, but not all birthing persons have access to them. Background/Purpose: Women using a doula for support during labor and childbirth is increasing, with 6% of women in 2012 utilizing doulas (Dekker, 2017). The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists [ACOG] recommends one-to-one labor support to improve labor outcomes. The purpose of this literature review was to determine the effects of labor support from doulas on birth outcomes. Theoretical Framework: Kolcaba's Theory of Comfort can be used during childbirth.
