Abstract

Over the years, hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) have emerged as a significant challenge in the healthcare industry. Despite significant advancements in healthcare, pressure injuries continue to be a persistent global healthcare issue, closely linked to the safety of patients, affecting patient outcomes, and increasing healthcare costs (Gaspar et al., 2019). HAPIs are associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. HAPIs are likely to experience longer hospital stays, increased risk of infections, higher treatment costs, and potentially more significant health complications. Contexte et problématique : Lors d’un stage en groupe, la dynamique entre les stagiaires du groupe peut compromettre leurs apprentissages et nuire à l’expérience de stage. Les instruments de mesure recensés permettent d’évaluer différentes composantes de l’environnement d’apprentissage clinique (EAC) associées à l’expérience d’apprentissage de stagiaires, sans toutefois inclure la composante de la dynamique de groupe en lien avec leur expérience d’apprentissage. Healthcare is the ultimate team sport, and this case study explores how to build teamwork across teams. The ability for nursing, environmental services and food and nutrition services to work collaboratively to benefit patients is paramount to a patients experience and outcomes. The case study describes how the work was done to build teams and then improved outcomes in both patient and employee experiences. The learnings are applicable to any team setting not just those described in this case study.

Problem identification
Patients undergoing invasive procedures are highly vulnerable to adverse outcomes. From 2012 to 2013, 5.5 per cent of all inpatient admissions reported an adverse event. Perioperative nurses play an important role in providing safe patient care and acting as the patient advocate. This review of literature aims to examine the effects of perioperative staffing and patient safety. Three common staffing themes that impact the safety and quality of patient care were identified; namely, nurse-to-patient ratios, staff training and staff fatigue.

Abstract

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2019) reported in 2018-2019, U.S. nursing schools turned away more than 75,000 qualified applicants from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs due to insufficient numbers of faculty and clinical sites. Two-thirds of the nursing schools related a shortage of nursing faculty and/or clinical preceptors as a reason for not admitting qualified applicants (AACN, 2019).

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, some nursing homes have been ranked worst in the nation when rating the quality of resident care. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative strength of workplace stress, job satisfaction, organizational support, and personal data (number of years employed, age, highest education level) in predicting director of nursing (DON) intentions to leave the position.
